View Full Version : Highland Fling
So who is going to the Highland Fling this weekend?
A major spanner has been thrown into my plans to go. I went and raced on the road yesterday and have ended up with two massive saddle sores. I guess that's what you get for wearing old knicks on 100+ kilo rides:mad:
I'm still planning to go, and still planning on riding singlespeed (I'll blame Alchemist if this turns out to be a bad idea).

Its a GREAT idea :D :D :D , how it turns out for you is not my fault ;)
Are you heading down on Saturday or at sparrow's on Sunday morning?
I think I'll head down on Saturday night 7.30'ish and sleep in the van. It couldn't be any worse than driving down on Sunday to get there before rego closes at 6.30am:eek:

Its a GREAT ideaSo, Alchemist, are you still SS'ing, or was your foray into the land of the bouncy geared bike on Saturday enough to convince you to take the SOFT! option? :)

Still SSing, but I foresee something bouncy in my future. I just need to figure out how much bounce, probably somewhere between 4 and 8 inches.

I'll be there on my 6" squishy - not climbing too fast but hopefully making up some time on the downhills.

I'll be there, riding along at my own pace going for a 1pm finish 5.5hours should be a good time.
early long range forecast is 22degrees and fine so not too hot but bring the sunscreen.
See you there.

I'll be there as well,
hoping for around the 6hr mark.
My knee is still sore from crashing (pwned?) in the 4x
Lucky theres 2 transition points so I can pull out if needed.( which i hope doesn't happen.)

Dreggsy, I think you were supposed to be "owned".
Alchemist - Aiming to finish before McBain
hoping for around the 6hr mark.
I better give you the car keys, cause I'm aiming for around 8 hours on the singlespeed, if I can even sit on a saddle by the weekend.

You wont get a chance to sit in the saddle on the SS ;)
Well I won't bother putting the comfy saddle on then. So now to the most common question before these events, made even more difficult with the recent rain, what tyres to run?

What tyres for day that is likely to be wet over a mix of well draining sand and not well draining clay, with darker soil and rocks here and there for good measure? Bit of an ask, really.
Keep it simple - something that rolls well but will still grip a bit if it all turns to slop. I'll probably just go with a Larsen on the back and a Speccy Fast Trax on the front, because that's just what is already on the bike.
What snacks and munchies to pack is more of a concern for me. :)

Cool Dunk,
It looks like i get a new car.........and i'll most probably/definately be drunk by the time you cross the line.
I'm going to run Larsens most probably tyres and fill them with concrete so I dont get a flat.
as for food im taking a huge amount of Gu, a camelback filled with water and a bidon with Endura and spare Endura powder maybe a small bottle of cocacola for the end 10 kms.
At the DW100 I had kidney pains from mixing gatorade to heavy,
hoping the HF is 100km not 107km like the DW100.

I haven't heard much about the race. How was it, and how did everyone go?
It was great.:D
I rode my singlespeed, but probably chose the wrong gear (34:20) which was great for the middle, hilly section, but was too low for the flatter sections, I lost sooo much time just spinning out. I finished in 6 hours 54 min, I was just hoping to finish in under 8 hours, as it was only my second ride on a singlespeed in a couple of years.

Yeah, a great event. I found it a *lot* more enjoyable than the Dirt Works 100km. The Southern Highlands really is a good place to go riding.
Damn singlespeeding freaks, I can't even beat 'em with the full complement of gears. ;)

You missed a great event PDogg - it's got instant classic all over it.
I think Dunk would have been even faster if he'd had a decent pair of forks. I did 6:26 which was just over an hour faster than my Dirt Works 100 time.

I rode my singlespeed
Was it light pink by any chance?
So what was the quickest singlespeed time you have heard of ?

Matt Chan did 5:23 on his rigid old Specialized conversion.

No, I'm not man enough to ride a pink bike. Black GT Zaskar X.
