You probably should learn to keep you pedals level whennot pedalling! You are gonna get really sore toes or fall over quite hard when your pedal strikes the ground. Maybe wearing shinguards would be good too, pedal gash marks aren't much fun. :(
But happy riding! :)

Told her to level the pedals out pretty much straight away when i noticed her doing it, she got em up a couple of times, it takes time. I recommended shin pads to her but she's wants the scars, meh, her choice.

she'll say that until it happens. i used to ride with them at all times then gave up because i never missed the pedals. a week ago i saw 3 inches of shin bone, meh. still not going to wear them, not comfortable enough to justify it.
anyway, cool vid. for a first ride it is much better than many i have seen.

Nice work. keep riding BUT you might want to get some better riding shoes because Chucks (im sure your wearing chucks) aint the best shoes to ride in. take it from someone who knows....

PM, I'm going to say this, because Nitwit, as your boyfriend, isn't going to push you hard to get you into this sport, because he's a really nice guy and doesn't want to pressure you...
Two VERY important things to stay healthy on the bike and enjoyment of the sport:
1. You GOTTA coast with both your feet LEVEL on the pedals. It's better for:
- your overall shock absorption (one of your legs is almost hyper-extended in your video). Less chance of you getting bucked off your bike.
- if you hit a sharp bump, you won't mess up your knee (that hyperextension thing again)
- it's only a matter of time before you smoke your foot and your pedal into something, which is gonna really hurt and probably make you crash
- as a fringe benefit, it makes you look like a seasoned rider, and not someone new to the sport :)
2. I would seriously consider some more safety gear, especially knee-shin guards, 'cause that first time you drive your pedal spikes into your shin.... you'll remember that feeling for a LONG time.... . Also, you might find longer sleeved shirts give better protection (at least a T-shirt), and "shy-shorts" a lot more comfortable and easier to ride in than jeans....
I hope you end up LOVING mountainbiking, so these are just some tips that I'd say, as someone impartial to your relationship with Nitwit.
Great video, btw!

Great stuff, Pretty Mistake, excellent to see you having a go!:)
As the guys say, wear some protection, and get your pedals level. Also, standing on the pedals, not sitting is really required when on rough terrain. You won't get bucked off so easy.
But you'll get there in time, you've got a good teacher to help you.

Even though i managed to count 18 bruises on myself at the end of the day, it was still worth it..
I went for a ride today with my sprained ankle from the weekend and that sucked...

with keeping you pedals level
if you keep locking your left (i think) when you ride, when you start ripping some more technical sruff and then when you stack it you have a very large chance of snapping your knee cap.. (my mate did it :P)
hope you can understand that

Yeah, great music. It's about time someone posted a vid with Tool as the soundtrack instead of the usual skip-hop rubbish that seems to be infecting the mountain bike community at the moment.
Also, with regards to riding with out shin guards, I used to always slip off my pedals for some reason. Now I always make sure I keep the arch of my foot over the pedal axel, and my foot as close to the crank arms as possible. I will probably get ribbed for bringing this up, but if your getting tips from your boy friend and his mates, who are probably pulling back flips, they may not think to tell you what most mountain bikers do subconsciously. I, on the other hand, am a terrible rider and since using this technique I haven't slipped of my pedals once. My shins thank me for it every day.
If you don't want to wear shinnies this tip will help you with confidence. ;)
