I have 12 domain names currently registered to me and my advice is don't go australian unless you need a .au extension. For all of mine I use GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com), $7.95USD for a .net/.com/.org for 1 year. That works out to be about 10bucks australian.

When it comes to domain names don't be afraid to buy overseas at the risk of being ripped off. I haven't had a single problem with GoDaddy with any of my 12 domain names wheras when I delt with an australian company I had a big fair trading fiasco trying to get them unlocked and working etc because the people were stooges. Besides for $10 a year what have you got to lose? Their transfer of DNS settings is also the fastest I have ever had too. It can take up to 72 hours for DNS to transfer typically, however its only ever taken mine 12 - 24 hours.

If you meant a place to host your .net domain name then I suggest techark, www.techark.com. I use them for my hosting business and their uptime is very reliable and Monte is a good bloke and always lets you know if server upgrades are going to be happening, when it will be down and for how long. Best service I've had with about 6 different providers.

GoDaddy is a domain name provider, thats all. In addition to owning a domain name you need to purchase webhosting which is hard drive space on a web server. You connect your domain name to this webserver via unique dns settings given to you by the provider of your webhosting. Just about every single host that you pay for will provide you with FTP facilities. Basically it works like this when someone types in your URL.

Your Server (HTTP)

FTP Access (Secure Login)
