It'll happen here soon...

The Kazakhstani government has launched a condemnation and possible legal action on maverick Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev!

This follows the brave journalists decision to front the MTV europe music awards - an event that may be viewed as corrupt and decadent by Kazakh authorities.

This sort of draconian clamp n freedom of speech is the sort of thing that may be happening here in Australia following the new anti-sedition laws!

I shall be watching the events of this case with great interest and can only pray for the safety of Mr Sagdiyev...

It's true, but not the angle the originator of the thread has it:

Borat 'utterly unacceptable'

Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry threatened legal action against a British comedian who wins laughs by portraying the central Asian state as a country populated by drunks who enjoy cow-punching as a sport.

Sacha Baron Cohen, who portrays a spoof Kazakh television presenter Borat in his Da Ali G Show, has won fame ridiculing Kazakhstan, the world's ninth largest country yet still little known to many in the West, on British and US channels.

Cohen appears to have drawn official Kazakh ire after he hosted the annual MTV Europe Music Awards show in Lisbon earlier this month as Borat, who arrived in an Air Kazakh propeller plane controlled by a one-eyed pilot clutching a vodka bottle.

"We do not rule out that Mr Cohen is serving someone's political order designed to present Kazakhstan and its people in a derogatory way," Kazakh Foreign Ministry spokesman Yerzhan Ashykbayev told a news briefing.

"We reserve the right to any legal action to prevent new pranks of the kind." He declined to elaborate.

Cohen's earlier jokes about the Central Asian state include claims that the people would shoot a dog and then have a party, and that local wine was made from fermented horse urine.

"We view Mr Cohen's behaviour at the MTV Europe Music Awards as utterly unacceptable, being a concoction of bad taste and ill manners which is completely incompatible with ethics and civilised behaviour," Ashykbayev said.

Yeah, it's not the most politically correct of acts. To be honest if Cohen hadn't based him in Kazakhstan and made him Turkish say, there'd have been an uproar from day one! (Borat's been kicking around for over 5 years now!)

At the end of the day Borat treads the fine line between the Wests stereotypes of foreign journalism and old fashioned 'darkie' jokes.

When he first started out as Borat it was more about taking the piss out of dumb arse members of the aristocracy who'd be interviewed by Borat and sucked into believing this grinning, sexually ambiguous bear-baiter was a genuine foreign correspondent. The same as in the early days of Ali G!

Unfortunately like Ali G he's gotten too well known so the prank element of the humour has had to be discarded leaving the piss stake of central european culture which was bound to offend soon enough

Shame though. He's a fucking funny character, and to be honest I worked with an Iraqi guy in geelong who was exactly like him!

"Like cats and dogs?"
" No , Like PISS"

The early days were hilarious. Call me a bigot and a dinsaur but PC is a load of crap. Problem is some will take thing a bit too far.
