Stumbled across this picture the other day - thought it was pretty timely.
What themes does it conjure-up for you?

The word is 'conjure'
Ah, yeh, thanx for that..
Back in school i can remember discussing the symbolism of Uncle Sam, so having come across this picture really brought back memories.
I can remember the teacher and the students being quite divided about the ultimate purpose of this symbolic campaign - our teacher insisted 'Uncle' was a freedom figure and many student simply didnt divert from the teachers straight direction. But others werent so accepting, like myself. Although i was in the top English class, i would constantly get poor marks because i didnt share the teachers view.
In the end, I think our discussions really emphasised the generational gap between 'baby boomers' and the 'XY generation' - the difference is very clear.
It appears this image is now being utilized by conflicting organisations - anti-Bush and Bush supporters alike.
Obviously, the purpose of this campaign was to lure young men to fight for their freedom, and for the 'good' of the world.
Interesting how this ironic image has re-emerged, and how significant it is to todays politics.

To me Uncle Sam was supossed to be a leader for the people, NOT a military symbol like his predeccesor Lord Kitchener (the british one). so that poster screams to me "the people are pissed and the government are gonna get it".

Yes, Uncle Sam the person was an advocate for the people, not the poster. Im referring to manner in which the government uses this poster in their favour, not to the peoples benefit. These days 'Uncle Sam' is often used in referring to to the US gov.
