Who was your hero, either childhood or present? Mine when I was younger would have to have been Omar Vizkel when he played for the Cleveland Indians.

Mark Swatzerrer(spelling?) after last night:D
umm nope i don't really have a hero...
how do you define a hero though?
someone you respect, some one you idolise or somewhere in between?

Those people who work with the ill, mentally ill and the poor - those are the real and understated hero's of our time.

Either really, IMO anyone who you respect, look up to, or even to an extent idolise (although I hate that word).

I have a few hero's, and I think it's kind of pretencious to talk of "real" hero's as being people who phillathrapists (sp). I don't get any inspiration from people who help the poor, or cure diseases. I just don't. But that's me personally.

Anyway a big childhood hero of mine, and recently again, is Wayne gardner.
This guy did some of the most amazing things, and had some of the greatest victories under the most insane circumstances. Really inspires me....

then shaun palmer, this guy is awesome. What more can I say. Since like 96 this guy has aways shown me how to kick ass. If I could be half the man he is, I would be proud.

Kurt Cobain.... meh another rockstar, he came from the gutter to become a superstar and died young. There's alot to it but he inspires me in a whole new way....

and that's all a hero should do, inspire us.. make us want to better ourselves...

Douglas Bader, legless WWII fighter pilot. I read his biography when I was an aeroplane obsessed 9 year old, because it had a picture of a Spitfire on it, and I was totally blown away. It was also the first 'grown up' book I'd read, so it gave me a pretty good liking of reading too!

I agree with NeBoS, most heros you never hear about!

I'm not sure about sporting people being heros though, to my mind being a hero involves making some sort of sacrifice, or being at risk of death. I guess I admire some old time racing drivers and motorcyclists (back in the day when 1in 10 F1 drivers got killed in the course of a season) I'd like to think they are heros, but not sure, because they were doing it for fun and accepted the risk.

What i meant was, these 'real' day to day people, like you and i, are out there giving their time to better humanity - the shit they put up with is truly inpsiring.

And i cant see how a sports star is anymore of a hero than a phillanthrapist.

Mate i totally love sports persons/heros. One of my all time hero's would have to be Doohan (5% metal by body weigth), Bazza Sheen - two top blokes, and who would always ride with chronic injury cos they love their sport so much. Also people like Armstrong, who are using their experience, fame and success to improve worldly issues, rather than walk the red carpet.

Its just that i often come i contact with unsung heros and i thought it was worth mentioning.

Johnny Wadel is my hero.

By chance I saw him in my favorate bike shop (Hi-WAYS) and just chatten away as normal. You would believe he had gone thru all he has. The we get onto the subject of the Mont 24 hr he came 11th in solo men which is bloody fantastic. I strugle after 4 laps at our little 12hr and Ive had a few hrs rest in between in a team.

He is my hero as a downhiller, survivor, athlete & all round nice guy.

Don Bradman has alwasy been my inspiration. I will never excel like he did, but I work toward it.

He would thrash cricket teams on the field, and be the consummate gentleman off the field. Also, he was a successful stockbroker in business.

A well rounded man.

Douglas Bader was an absolute legend.

Can't fault an Ace with metal legs. After numerous escape attempts from his POW camp he was threatened with the removal of his false legs! In the end they just shipped him off to Colditz!

Patrick de Guyardon. Amazing skydiver, did some of the most wild and amazing work throughout his career including: Inventing Sky-surfing, Inventing the Bat-Suit, BASE jumping into a 1500ft cave before doing it a second time from a helicopter hovering 50ft above the mouth! He was tragically killed in Hawaii in the late 90's after an accident involving a prototype bat-suit.

Gordon Strachan: Former Aberdeen, Man Utd, Leeds and Scotland player.
Helped guide Aberdeen to win the European cup winners cup in 1983, had 50 caps for Scotland and is now unfortunately managing Glasgow Celtic. Great player in his day and one of the funniest characters in football management.

Here's a few classic Strachan quotes:

Southampton manager Gordon Strachan on Wayne Rooney
Its an incredible rise to stardom. At 17 you're more likely to get a
call from Michael Jackson than Sven Goran Eriksson.

Reporter: Gordon, Do you think James Beattie deserves to be in the
England squad?
Strachan: I dont care, I'm Scottish

Reporter: "Gordon, can we have a quick word please?"
Strachan: "Velocity" [walks off]

Reporter: Welcome to Southampton Football Club. Do you think you are
the right man to turn things around?
Strachan: No. I was asked if I thought I was the right man for the job
and I said, "No, I think they should have got George Graham because
I'm useless."

Reporter: Is that your best start to a season?
Strachan: Well I've still got a job so it's far better than the
Coventry one, that's for sure.

Reporter: Are you getting where you want to be with this team?
Strachan: We're not doing bad. What do you expect us to be like? We
were eighth in the league last year, in the cup final and we got into
Europe. I don't know where you expect me to get to. Do you expect us
to win the Champions League?

Reporter: Gordon, you must be delighted with that result?
Strachan: You're spot on! You can read me like a book.

Strachan: I've got more important things to think about. I've got a
yogurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my
priority rather than Agustin Delgado.

Reporter: This might sound like a daft question, but you'll be happy
to get your first win under your belt, won't you?
Strachan: You're right. It is a daft question. I'm not even going to
bother answering that one. It is a daft question, you're spot on there.

Reporter: Bang, there goes your unbeaten run. Can you take it?
Strachan: No, I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home,
become an alcoholic and maybe! jump of a bridge. Umm, I think I can
take it, yeah.

Reporter: There's no negative vibes or negative feelings here?
Strachan: Apart from yourself, we're all quite positive round here.
I'm going to whack you over the head with a big stick, down negative man,
down.

Reporter: where will Marion Pahars fit into the team line-up?
Strachan: Not telling you! It's a secret. >

Reporter: You don't take losing lightly, do you Gordon?
Strachan: I don't take stupid comments lightly either.

Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesbrough were
better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there....

Jose Luis Chilavert - Goalkeeper and captain of Paraguay

Kickass goalie who would also take the penalties, but that's not why.

At the '98 world cup he was asked how he was dealing with the pressure.
He looked the reported in the eye and said, "this is not pressure, this is football. When my people don't know how they will feed their children, that is pressure."

No hero as such, but someone who I look upto the most, is my father as he was big on helping people- and never let his illness get him down, was always there to support us in whatever whe did.... And he lived roughly 47 years longer than he "should" have.

He passed away 3 years ago today- from said illness.

Also, Adam Clayton a pro bassist, who lernt whilest on tour in the 80's with now one of the biggest bands in the world. Marty Turco also gets a mention...

Cricket existed long before I was born. It will be played centuries after my demise. I was priveleged to give the public my interpretation of its character in the same way that a pianist might interpret the works of Beethoven
