Four - Twelve

hey all
Im looking for some dh/freeride shorts and 2 that ive seen are:
TLD se air race shorts
Fox 360s
the tlds seem to be lighter and more breathable but the foxs appear to offer more protection with hip pads ect.
Im looking for opinions of anyone who owns these shorts but am also open to other suggestions
any help would be much appreciated
Use the Fox nicks with the pad inserts, and the TLD shorts.
Works for me.

i have had Trot Lee shorts for almost 2 years now, and they are bloody good.
they still, after many, many, many crashes and washes have not faded, have not ripped, in fact do not have a single blemish.
they certainly are very breathable, i have been using them for XC over the past few weeks and they are surprisingly comfortable and cool - and are way better than nicks (IMO).
padding? who needs padding?!
jokes.
i would also recommend some nicks with pads with TLD shorts over them, padded baggy shorts are stiffer and restrict movement more - padded nicks don't seem to restrict movement nearly as much.
TLD all the way!

Baaaahhh. My hemp shorts are on thier 9th year and my Cambria nics that I wear inside em gave up a year ago.
Buy some good comfy Hemp shorts, little black sheep.
Or Hoots if ya have to be seen or whatever the gig is???

Quick question:
The TLD Sprint Race (http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=23541) are the shorts to get I'm assuming? (DH/FR) There's also TLD XC Air Race (http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=23542) available, though at a slightly more expensive price (which seems odd...considering there's less protection presumably). Not sure if the XC model is really what I'm after..
There's also the motox version.. dunno if I'd need to go this far though! But.. the price seems similarish
Thoughts? Will be used for DH

I have the TLD XC Air shorts..they rock. If you fall off they're gonna give you all the protection that you can really have..that being said they wont rip and you wont graze up..you will probably bruise though..but I expect that from a big off.
I have had a monster of a stack and a few minor ones..the monster left me fucked up, really bad and my shirt/deuter hydropack/back/shoulder destroyed..shorts and below were fine..well bruised but not grazed and cut up..shorts do not even have a torn thread. So..let me tell you they can handle the crashes!! They're super breathable and I find the chamois is excellent, plus they're easy to move around on the bike with, the pockets are deep/semi waterproof (sweat, med rain) and the zips are great.

Hmm tempting.. Anyone else? Air vs Sprint? The Airs are still more expensive (for less protection?)

Slightly related note, im looking at getting some pants when im over in the UK for Christmas, and it appears that the Royal gear is cheaper than the TLD gear over there, so for a bit of bling and saving moolah i was thinking of getting Royal pants. However, im wondering whether they are ripstop, or just normal breathable cotton/nylon/funkysynthetics.
I had a pair of Fox shorts which lasted all of two rides due to my silly antics of bottoming onto my rear wheel.
My TLDs lasted a lot longer, but as they should, they were MX pants before an accident where a mates dog ate one of the legs below the knee. A bit of work with a commercial sewing machine and i had shorts, but they were never as comfortable as proper shorts.

I have/had 3 paris of fox shorts, all torn/ripped within 3 months, i even tore a pair on my stem with no sharp points anywhere , just the pressure of a knock of my shorts through the neoprene knee pads ! absolutely useless IMO.
I now have 4 pairs of Oakley and they are 10 times more comfortable and better quality , they are lighter, stronger and a better construction by a mile. The zips open without sticking and the elastic panels are awesome. They also come with clip in knicks (maybe not as good as buying good quality knicks) but you get them anyway and i still use the oakley knicks for daily rides.
They can be bought on ebay.com (us) and sent to oz for around $50 a pair if you combine shipping and buy 2 at a time ..... just rem the exchange rate has gone to shit so they might be more depending on the price you get.

I've got two pairs of Royal shorts, the first ones I bought were the Future Combat Shorts which are a fairly heavy DH/Freeride short.

I'm not sure exactly what sort of material you call them other than to say it's a mixture of Polyester and Nylon and make an annoying swishy sound like ski pants when you walk around in them. I wouldn't recommend them for XC riding at all as they are fairly heavy and the swishy sound does start to shit you after a bit of pedaling. For shuttles however they are pretty kickarse and are plenty strong enough to take whatever abuse you chuck at them and they are surprisingly airy and light while riding considering how beefy they seem when you first put them on!
My faves however are the Function Zipper Shorts which are made out of some fancy microfibre kinda stuff that's nice and airy and the waist is adjustable with a couple of velcro bits which makes them nice and comfy.

They're cut to sit well when you're pedaling so your mates don't have to cop an eyefull of hairy arsecrack when they're riding behind you but I have briefly snagged them on the seat once or twice on steep, techy bits in the two months I've had them but the material is so stretchy that I can't see it ripping anytime soon.
They're great for XC/All Mountain riding but I can't see them offering too much abrasion resistance if (when) you stack!

So.... by the looks of it the last few posts are in agreement of FOX make great suspension but their shorts are crap . There are tonnes of others out ther without paying big $$$.
They are actually the one part of your kit that you will feel the greatest annoyance or the most comfortable....on even par with a crap saddle/seat.
