interested, but i cant see anywhere on there that covers the cost?? :o
Hmmm guess we have to wait till tomorrow to enter and see the pricing. Got to say I like the event race jersey. Think it looks nice.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.....Entries delayed 24 hours. Oh well.
I really like this bit on the site:
"10th May
2006 Date announced
The Dirt Works 100km Classic is back again on Sunday 7th May 2006. "
Actually I think their website is poorly done with all the data from last years race still there. But meh, it's just my opinion (which is what the internet is about isn't it?). I will still be entering though ;)

it depends on costs really for me, and wether i have the availiable cash at that point in time. i hope so! Id like to know wht these events arent MTBA sanctioned events so that perhaps they could be a little more cost effective to enter?

Agree 100%. I want to enter as many events as possible in 2006 (4,8,12 and maybe the 24 hour if I can find a competitive team mate) but a lot of events come down to value for money. I will be seeing what the cost is and if they are using the same course as last year as I have mixed reviews about the course they used.

Maximum Adventure have their own insurance coverage, so don't need the MTBA coverage. In any case, that's only about $5-10 of the entry - the rest is needed to actually pay for the event, since these things don't run themselves.
The other issue is that to be sanctioned by MTBA you have to conform to any of their rules for that kind of event/race.

whats off putting is that an event like the fling was $75 bucks, + accomodation, fuel costs etc. thats a pretty steep price for a days riding. i know the argument is if you cant afford it then dont do it, but for that kind of money i would expect a lot as a rider. im intrested in the event but will deinatley be looking at it form a value for money standpoint, if i dont feel im getting my near hundred bucks worth out of it ill hold back on doing them in the future and concentrate on events like the working week series.
organisers need to remember that yes, this is a "special event" , but bang for buck wise will be compared to recently run races like the blackmans 4 hour which cost a whopping $25 to enter.
just my 2cents.

[...] ill hold back on doing them in the future and concentrate on events like the working week series.Fair enough - but you also need to realise that WWS and the 4hr and similar races are somewhat simpler to organise. They've still got about the same headaches dealing with entries/payment and that kind of thing, but for the "lap" based races you don't need to work with the local community and landowners, get the RTA/NPWS/Police/SES/RFS/VRA/whoever on board (usually costing $$ as well), spend weeks out there working on 100km of course (scouting, trackwork, putting out markers, taking GPS readings, etc), spend days after the race cleaning the course of markers and garbage, and the many other things that happen behind the scenes.
Remember, the organisers (Max Adventure for the DW100, Wild Horizons for the Fling) aren't charities - they've got to pay their staff and make a buck or it isn't worth their while - but trust me, they aren't rolling in cash, and they do know they've got to make the events good value.
I have no problem paying the entry fees (even though it really adds up when you've done the number of events I have this year) because I know how much work they put in to so that we can enjoy ourselves.

The full fling was $100 so $1 a kilometre. But they were giving away a backpack valued at $50. I have heard nothing but outstanding comments about the fling and the trails that were used. I definately plan on doing it in 2006.
And for Xmas I am getting a (cheap) tent, camp bed and pop up gazebo for travelling to these events and keeping the accom costs down.

ive heard that the fling was quite good as well.
OK, maybee im giving the wrong impression here. im not attacking the events as such, i thikn they are a great idea and a way to ride otherwise unrideable land. i guess my point is that the dollar only stretches so far so i need to be selective in what events i enter. in all honesty ill probably enter as much as i can, money permitting.
as far as camping goes, its not particuly attractive to me on 2 reasons. 1) i am prone to getting a sore / bad back and after riding generally need a decent bed to sleep in. 2) im affraid of getting my bike lifted after some of the stories that came out of the Mont.
on the other hand i do realise that there is a social element that goes with it all, so i may give it a go and see how i fare

1. Can be solved by investing in a 4wd mat. That is a very thick self inflating sleeping mat (that also take up a bit of space in the car, even deflated). I don't usually sleep well the first night in a tent, but have solved that with a queen sized 4wd mat that is designed to be folded in two and fits in my 2man tent. It's comfortale as a queen Dee-lux folded in two!! Add your normal pillow and it's just like curling up at home.
2. Buy a lock. Either lock your bike to/in your car (as you can often camp/park in the same place) or lock your bike to a couple of others, or to a nearby genetator, or tree, or team mate when they're not looking... I think the theft issue at a 24hr is valid, but is just as likely to happen when you're off cheering your mates as it is when you're sleeping.

cheers jim, thanks for the heads up, ill check out the 4wd mat
as for theft, id actaully thought about one of those laptop movement detector anti theft divices that beeps loudly when its moved and attatchng it around the frame. may be enough to keep somone whos having a go at stealing it from completing the transaction.
well entries are now open. $90 for the full event. have to think this one over.
$90 to get dirty and severly punished?
Far out... I'm going to give up MTBing and look in to joining bondage clubs
That said, I'll try and ride this race, it should be fun even without leather whips.

A few mates and I entered the 50km (which would be even more expensive per km!). I heard how painful the full one is from a work mate. I'm not too keen on driving home after 8 solid hours of riding. 4 hours will be plenty! Go for a ride the day before seeing as we're making the trip out there, take it easy, have a few beers the night before, etc...

Compare to racing XC a few years ago its not that bad! From my hazy memory the nationals (under CA 2000/2001) would have cost at least $40-50 (maybe more) and I would have ridden 20-25km in B grade?

if you guys are complaining about price,,,,,try doing a triathlon....
the current Kurnell series races are $70 for one race, which would take the average novice just over one hour to complete...
sure a lot more involved in running a triathlong ....but i am looking forward to the cheaper events in the mtb world compared to triathlons....
