Howdy
Just been out for a ride in the local area along the Yarra and Dights Fall(?), and now you don't just have to worry about the snakes in the pants guys;) , but also the real thing.
Just near the top of the stairs near Studdly Park Rd, and there was a beauty sun baking.
Not sure what type of snake it was but it had a nice set of brown stripes and a greenish belly.
Needless to say I went the other way.
So be careful and enjoy you riding.

Yeah i know the feeling well.
Got the shits scared outta me when i nearly stood on a 6ft long snake the other day.
That's keeping me on the lookout at the moment for sure.

I had one pay a little too much interest in me a month or two back while riding over to the top of the track at Kinglake (through all those tufts of big grass stuff that are there). I heard a rustle as i rode past and when I looked back a snake was lying over the top of one of those tufts with it's head sitting over the track, making me thinking that it jumped out at me as I went past. So it's definately worth keeping your eyes open this time of year.

Hehe, post of the day!!
Maybe snakes have changed since i last saw one but i'm pretty sure they still don't have legs! :p Or perhaps it was a 'lizard snake'??
The last snake i saw was 1.5 metre-ish tiger snake, it scared the shit out of me because i nearly ran over it!

I must say that is another thing I dont miss about Australia. I've almost rolled over a few while riding the convict trail in Wisemans ferry and again at Oxford falls. It's always a bit disconcerting, especially when out of mobile phone range. Enjoy snake season fella's, I don't envy you.

last time i was riding down near the yarra and a big brown snake jumped out right out infort of me, i had to bunny hop over the ugly bugger.
Seen 3 at close range already this year! Closest was walking through a hay paddock & my mate accidentally kicked a 6ft Brown that was hiding in the grass, scared the shit out of us. It reared up a good 50cm of the ground, as we were getting clear of it.

i have not seen one while riding but at the jumps near mine there would atleast be about 20 snake holes everywhere and they bury themselves/make their housey holes thingy's in the up/down ramps. it makes us pack darkies as if you under shoot im worried about a snake sliding out of their hole and biting us.
really dont want to see a snake either!

I ride the trails in studly up to westerfolds all the time... sooooo many snakes in the sections through ivanhoe... seen a number this november already... sssssssss scary! rode over two last year in the single track, they go pretty mental as you'd expect! Gotta watch out, especially if you are behind someone who does hit one!!

Out again today, and as I rode across a small bridge by the yarra something slithered between the gaps:eek: , so from then on eye must have just about been out of their socket scoping out every piece of sun light ground.
Then while up by the falls a couple of other dudes came down the hill and I heard one say he nearly ran over a brown snake, nice :D .
They even felt it necessary to go back and check it out, NOT ME.
So keep your eyes open, and enjoy.
I went out through the Yarra Trails on Friday evening ... not a single snake. With all this talk about snakes being everywhere I was kinda disappointed, although I really do like the idea of never running into the buggers in the first place :D
That being said, I always keep a couple of roller bandages and such with me whenever I ride there now.. the little first aid baggy is a perfect fit inside the hollowed out bit of a Lefty headtube :)
BTW, some might find this useful... know your snakes: http://www.usyd.edu.au/anaes/venom/snakebite.html

It might be the time I go out, around 5 pm so it still quite hot and the sun is shinning on the ground.
Thanks for the link I now know which ones might get me in trouble.
Anyhow get out there and enjoy.

Hey guys just wanting to say so far this summer havnt seen any snakes to date when out riding, Last year i saw quite a few out at lystie but this year i havnt which is good, also was up at Mt Hotham on the weekend riding didnt see any up there. Mt Hotham is going to be a great place to ride next summer as they are hoping to open up more trails for use.

Well were shall we start with today. Riding along the single track near the golf course in ivanhoe, carrying abit of speed i see this greenish and brown/yellowish "stick" then i thought shit sticks dont move like that, and found it happened to be a tiger snake. Close encounter of the first kind today. Next im coming around a corner near the same spot and i almost run over a rabbit than ran infront of me wheels, yes a rabbit. Pretty entertaining i was sooo close. I begin to ride back and im riding on the main big trail not the single track this time as i was alittle shaken by the tiger snake. Happily riding along i look infront of me and there is the same snake in the same spot just as the first encounter. First time this summer seeing a snake, first time almost running the same one over twice!

I also saw a small tiger snake about a metre long on the Venuto club side of the Yarra today. I spotted it in time and stopped about 5 or 6 metres from it. I looked at it then it looked at me and slithered away off the single track. This particular part of the track is overgrown and probably only about 0.5 metre wide and I was a bit worried that the bugger was waiting for me. I pedalled as fast as I could and liftedmy legs in the air as I passed the spot where it dissapeared.
I'm starting to get freaked out by this thread. I've seen three snakes by the Yarra so far this summer and I haven't even been riding there too often. I'm tending to be on the lookout all the time and am having visions of snakes attaching themselves to my bike or worse still to my leg. If kevlar or some form of snake proof socks and pants exist I want them.

I have run over a rabbit down there once, it just didn't get out of the way!!
I went around a tight corner and kind of surprised it but either of us didn't react fast enough. RIP little dude, i really didn't want to squish your head. :(

Hey Lemon,
That was me and my mate at Dights Falls Last weekend. I was in front, and he reckons I just about ran over a brown snake - but I didn't even see it even though it was right in the middle of the path. That must have been you down near the big dipper jump.
What worries me is the amount of near misses we must have, cos it's happened a few times that mates behind me tell me I just missed one. I just wanted to go back and see exactly what I had missed - probably a bit silly. It had slid away by then anyway.
I have seen a few others all along the Yarra too - I hate snakes.

I was riding down an old maintainance track that turned into a single track on the maribyrnong river. The trail had grass at least 2 metres tall either side and I just see the brown snake piss off infront of me, it certainly makes you think....

Hey Barry I thought it ws funny you guys wanted to go back and see the slippery bugger, myself I normally go the other way.
Anyhow I think it has a lot to do with the time I go out, the GF goes to the gym around 5 on the weekends so I hope on the bike.
At this time the sun is still on the ground and pumping out the heat.
If I go around 5:30 - 6 it seem cooler and I have not seen a snake at this time.
Keep you eyes peeled and enjoy the ride.

just a couple of days ago me and some mates went to dymo trails, my first jump of the day, heading in for the run up I looked down and CRAP too late i ran over about a 1 metre long tiger snake. He wasnt too happy either, quickly slithered off. for the rest of that day i stayed far away from the bushes!

A couple of years ago now i was out riding on the dirtbike and came across a Tiger Snake about 6-7foot long sunning its self on the road and with little time to react i hit the snake at flat out pace, and then noticed that the big bugger was chasing me down the track, and boy can they move quick when they want too.. I was on a CR125 4th gear and it was keeping up with me...
after that I've never hit another snake since...

interesting gravelrash. 4th gear on a 2 stroke and a snake keeping up highly doubt it! unless the bike was reving so slow it was about to stall. sorry but i know what 125's go like and im positive a snake would not keep up with 1 in 4 gear

Don't these bloody snakes sleep. I just got back from a night ride which was interupted by a large tiger snake that refused to get off the singletack. Even with four HID's pointed at him the bugger still refused to move. We ended up having to go back.
im pretty sure shining lights at snakes dont really do much. as they can't really see very well.
remember they smell and taste the air most of the time :)
anyway i saw a blue tongue lizard which was pretty cool...that was at the Collingwood Children's farm.
