Firstly let me say a big Merry Christmas and an even bigger Happy New Yr to all of you, i hope you all had a great night and you Sydney siders got to witness the awesome fireworks display last night!

From the 20th to the 22nd of January, myself and mat (Nitwit) will be participating in a fundraising ride for Juvenile Diabetes. This ride will take place in The Barossa Valley, Adelaide.

This ride has been organised by The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
JDRF is the worlds leading non-profit,non-governmental contributor of funds to diabetes research, funding an estimated 35% of all Type 1 diabetes related research globally.

Diabetes is a serious, chronic disease caused by problems with the production and supply of insulin in the body.

Three different diseases.
As the common feature of diabetes is high blood glucose, it is often mistakenly thought to be a single disease. There are actually SEVERAL types of diabetes.

- Gestational Diabetes
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Type 1

Whilst these three types of diabetes are all serious, the more serious of them is Type 1.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 (also known as Juvenile or Insulin dependent) diabetes is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases. It constitutes about 10% of all people with diabetes in Australia.

Type 1 diabetes is an 'autoimmune' disease, in which the body's immune system destroys the insulin producing islet cells in the pancreas, removing the body's ability to produce insulin.

People with type 1 diabetes must inject insulin several times a day in order to surive. This form of diabetes usually strikes children and young adults, though it can occur at any age.

While the cause of type 1 diabetes is not fully understood it is believed to be a combination of genetics and environmental factors.

It can not be prevented, nor can it be managed by diet or other lifestyle choices. With around 140,000 people with type 1 diabetes, Australia has one of the highest rates of the disease in the world and its incidence is increasing.

Complications of Diabetes:

Over time, high blood glucose levels cause permenant damage to blood vessels and the tissues and organs they supply. It can cause a number of complications including:
- Kidney Disease, Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in Australia.
- Cardiovascular Disease, People with diabetes are five times more likely to have heart disease.
- Blindness, Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in adults.
- Nerve Damage, About 60-70% of people with diabetes have mild to severe forms of nerve damage which leads to impaired function of organs such as, heart, bladder and penis.
- Amputation, Diabetes is the most common cause of amputation that is not the result of an accident.
- Shortened Life, Life expectancy with diabetes is shortened by an average of 15 yrs.
- Death (Diabetes is the sixth highest cause of death in Australia)

This ride is for an EXTREMELY good cause. It is about helping people who are less fortunate than most people health wise.

Myself (Julia Maher) and Nitwit (Mathew Mytka) will be riding for Macqaurie Bank, my parents will also be particpating. Mat will be riding 160kms and i will be riding 35kms (on a mtb), If you are interested in supporting us in this great cause please visit this link https://checkout2.payments.com.au/jdrf/ride.asp?p=5#records All you need to do is click on the " Support Rider " icon next to our names. Yes!!! As i stated before this is for a very good cause. Imagine being a kid and not being able to do all the things you would like to! Support of any kind is much appreciated and donations of anything would be fantastic. I cant stress how important this is.

Thank you to all the people who have replied so far, it means it will stay in new posts and people will be able to read it. Even if you cant sponsor right now, all you adelaide people, please try and get out there like Registered Nutter. Its just as needed.

Thanking you once again :)

Me and julz are training at 8,150ft and should be in top shape for the ride.
It has been slightly disappointing that not many people have posted some more words of encouragement, for all those that have thanks.

We need sponsors, big or small. Locals can come and cheer us on and meet up for a drink.

This is one of the kindest most generous acts a person could do, and I say rock on!!!!

There's inspiration there to organise a Brisbane fundraiser of some type....*thinks*.....

I've got a mate who is a Diabetic and I'm waiting for an easier solution for him, right now he currently has to inject himself 2-3 times a day, So an easier option to prevent any harm would be good, But a cure would be better!!!

Fucking brilliant job guys, Major props goes to you!!!!!!!!!!

guys i reckon this is great, what is the actual ride? (in terms of distance, etc)

ruckus lord, i agree with you completely, i think it would be great to organise a fundraising ride in brisbane, especially for a disease like diabetes (ie, people know it exists, but do not understand the full implications of the disease)

The ride is diveded into 3 distances. 35kms, 80kms and 160kms.. It is a set lap course through the Barossa. 35kms is a section of it, 80kms is one lap and 160kms is two laps. As i dont have a roadie to ride on im doing 35kms but putting road tyres (sp?) on my bike. Mat is borrowing one of my dads roadies and is doing 160kms. We havent had much of a chance to train on bikes but we are currently snowboarding in Vail, colorado which is a good work out for the legs.

It is for an extremely good cause and i cant stress how much we appreciate these kind words from you fellas. As we have said before, if there is anyone in Adelaide, feel free to come and watch and we are more than keen to meet up for a beer later or a bacardi and coke for myself.

Hope the weather in Sydney is a lil warmer than it is here... -30 degrees at the moment.. cold shit!!!

Keep up the good vibes peoples. Remember if you do want to donate, just click on the links in the first post and its fairly straight forward. Much appreciated. :D

As a diabetic myself I would like to thank everyone that is supporting the great cause and especially Julz and Mat for going out of there way to help raise money to find a cure.
As Ruckus Lord stated I too am waiting for an easier solution instead of injecting 4 times a day and with your help that can all be possible.

Thanking you all for your kind support

Hello all, Mat and myself have arrived back from overseas today. We have had an awesome time. However the ride is just a few days away :D ...

Between Macqaurie Bank colleagues and associates of the bank, the fundraising pool stands at approx. $100,000 at the moment which is fantastic, how ever myself and mat still are keen to get some personal sponsors just to help out and make that total a little bigger. We still need to raise a few g's to participate. Also, having fellow mountain bikers comment on this thread that understand the complications diabetes can cause hopefully inspires others to get involved.

So as we have said before, to donate, please click on the links in the first post or for you adelaide residents, please do your best to come along... You will get to see nitwit in lycra!!!

Thanks lots, Julz and Mat xo

For all those interested here is a summary of the weekend.

The ride went down on saturday morning at 7:30am with 167 riders battling intense heat, the mercury went from a mild 28 at the start and rose(sp?) to a staggering 45+. There were a few casualties from the heat with one guy actually passing out while on his bike. The event raised just over $600,000 which goes towards research for Juvenile Diabetes. This was a huge effort. One family from QLD, through the purchase of a pizza oven, organised an event for family and friends that was $100 a head (plus numerous other avenues) to raise a massive $50,000.

Many amazing stories before the ride inspired people to endure the record heat that was sweeping the state. 75% of the people had to pull out of the longer 160kms because of health concerns, although many wanted to go on (including myself, i managed one 80km lap) event organisers advised otherwise.

This was an amazing and truly inspiring event and i am surely going back next year. I am looking for interested Farkiners that would like to participate and put together a team? A thread will be posted about that soon.

Thanks for all the postistive replies.

Mat and Julz

It was an unreal experience.. sure it was a extremely hot day but so inspirational that the heat seemed like a minor issue.

As nitwit said there were casulties.. i happened to be one of them! I was serviced by the ever so helpful ambos due to almost passing out on the side of the road. I have never experienced heat stroke so bad.

Would you be interested in joining a farkin team? People from all over australia were riding..
