Hmmm ok..

Unlikely there is a problem with the forks,
but check the crowns for hairline cracks, especially underneath the crown.
check the lowers are not cracked also.

if it's not that grease all your headset up.

Make sure there is grease between the stem and the steerer as well, not alot, just a tiny bit, check that your bars are ok too, that the stem hasn't crushed it damaged the handlebars. Creaks at the front of the bike can be disaster, and I'm speaking from experience having a failed fork and planting my face into concrete off a 2m drop.

Check your frame around the headtube also.

Stem?
Try a mega-mega-mega thin layer of grease on the inside of your stem.
(both where it grips the steerer and the bars)

Sounds wierd I know but it stopped mine creaking on an old stem and never caused slippage.

yeah my shermans were creaking when they were new but once I rode them a few times the creaking sound on my forks went away. I think it was the crown on my forks that was making the creaking sound. Now it only occasionally does it when you pull up the front.

Give you forks a few rides and see what happens.

I think it was creaking in the head tube??? I had 2003 DJ1s and they creaked just like you're describing... never could find the problem though - I even took them off and rebuilt my head set, etc

Creaking on 2003 DJ'ers is a bad sign isn't it? 2003 Dirt jumpers had a problem with cracking/snapping..

Probably was. I couldnt never find any cracks or stress marks on them though. Ah well... I don't have them anymore - let alone the whole bike :D

Yes Creaking marzocchis is a sign of a about to give up fork,
if your marzocchi or any fork for that matter, is creaking, time to give it the toss.

if you can't find a crack in the crown, then the crack is hidden inside the crown in the cryofit of the legs.

Take everything apart and clean with an alcohol swap. Interfaces between handlebars and stem, stem and steerer etc. You may be surprised how much dirt gets in these areas? Once you lose contact between 2 areas, creaks can start to appear. Its worth a shot before you do anything too drastic.

Yeh any of the marzocchi's with the exr type crown/steerers had a problem with creaking even after just a few months of use, i know all the marzocchi's i've had that have this kind of crown/steerer set up creaked (2 marzocchi mxcs, exr pro 04 etc), just kept riding with it, never had a problem, its just annoying.
