G'day all,

I have been given an XTR rear hub that is brand-new - never ridden, never laced.

Problem is that the freewheel spins too freely - spins easily both clockwise and anticlockwise.

My LBS insured me that the hub is under warranty, so I should find the reciept and all will be cool. Only the person whom gave me the hub cannot find the reciept!

These things are specific for XTR and cost $300.00

What I want to know is, why are the pawls not engaging? This is a brand-new hub for crying out load! Is it possible a part has been taken out from inside the freewheel?

Any options/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Ben

reciept or not shimano should look after that. its a brand new hub that isnt working properly. if it is a problem and not just some random act of craziness that fixes itself if you do a b and c.

As I understand it, all Shimano hubs, XTR included, use freehub units that aren't serviceable. If the pawls are magically farked, you can't get in there to service it, you've just gotta replace the whole thing. The icing on the cake it that, as you've found out, the XTR ones are unique to XTR, and are bloody expensive to boot.

Disclaimer: take this advice with a grain of salt, since my experience of high-end shimano hubs is limited. (If I'm spending that kind of coin on a hub, it ain't gonna be Shimano.)

Thanks guys. I found out the price of the freehub - $230.00

My other concern now is - what if the thing shits itself again...

You sure you don't want to put that money toward a Hadley or something? Buy once, buy right.

Try overseas stores, small US shops can be quite good with getting specific parts in and it tends to be a LOT cheaper. If you can quote a part number it will make things easier, and probably a good idea to ask for prices from a number of stores in one shot.

If you are going to spend $230 though, honestly there are better (complete hub) options out there for a few more beans.

I am a big shimano fan, but you'd never find the hubs on my list. Not until they wake up and: a) use cartridge bearings, b) develop a freehub system that is serviceable and doesn't suck balls.
