I'm hoping to get to Thredbo to have a look at the Nationals sometime over the weekend of 20-22 Jan, but I've never been there before. What's it like for spectating? Do I need to purchase a lift ticket? Are there any particularly good or bad spots? So many questions!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Grab at leat one lift ticket and start up the top and just walk down the track over the length of the day. There's good spots all over the track: jumps at the top, rock garden down a bit from that, fast traverses in the middle, sharp switch backs and bermed corners down the bottom.

If by any chance you're a sick unit who likes a leisurely uphill stroll, around 4.5km give or take, you can walk it a section at a time, hang around for a bit then move further on up the hill. You can basically walk beside the track most of the way, there are a few sections where you will have to walk on the track itself but if you take care and look/listen for the bikes you will have ample time to get off the track (high side) as the riders come through.
Lift tickets are something like $19 for one trip or $23 for a full day.

there are loads of good spots to watch from, even really close to the finish there's some good stuff.

note that Friday afternoon is the 4X, which is the easiest thing to watch, and doesn't take any effort to walk all over the track (or next to it, whatever).

Sunday is DH racing though, which is when everyopne will be pinning it, so the best spectacles are caught then, generally. although, Elite and U19s qaulify on Saturday arvo, so they are going pretty hard then too.

go into the Raw NRG shop when you get there and ask for some recomendations and a map, maybe even see if they could mark out the best spots on the map for you.

If you want to ride there anyone know how much it is? Not in the nationals of course :p Is it just the price of the lift ticket?

Regards,
Shane

As far as riding the track at the Nationals without being in the race ???
I reckon you'll get away with it on Thursday, Friday and Sat morning (qualifiers on Sat arvo) and maybe even Sunday morning before the race.

There were punters riding the track when ever they wanted at the Nat round so I doubt it will change. Ching Ching.
It seems if you pay for a race you are restricted as to when you can ride (3 hours a day). If you rock up off the street and just want to ride? You can ride all day no worries  Puzzles me.

Hit it up mate, you'll love it :)

Very interesting point you've raised there mate. Think I'll be taking my race plate off and pretending I'm a punter if my practice gets rained out again ;)

I am pretty sure that the punters had plates as well bro. Just numbered outside competition class numbers :(
A mate of mine rocked up after being there for the 4x and went to get on the chair and they said "no plate, no ride".

Trust me, it had occured to me to do the same. Hate to burst ya bubble bro :o
