Hey,
I'm looking to step up my xc training at the moment for the winter season. I am struggling to find a half decent xc loop thats about 5km or longer. Basically what im looking for is:
I am looking for a xc loop that is close to melbourne but have found nothing. Close to melbourne rules out you yangs and beechworth. I'm looking for something thats about 5km or longer, with some good technical climbs(would love something with some lung busting climbs!) and decents. It doesn't have to be 100% single track but would like something roughly 75% single track.
If anyone that lives around the melbourne area could help me out it would be much appreciated!
Cheers
Chris

Lysterfield???? There is the Commonwealth Games track... and plenty of other that I've heard about.
Also isn't there tracks along the Yarra???
BTW, I don't live in Melbourne, but have ridden at Lysterfield.
EDIT: Contact the Fat Tyre Flyers, they are a great, friendly club and will help you out :)

come on the fat tyre flyers wednesday night rides leaving from the scout hall in irvine road ivanhoe at 6.30pm every wednesday - you'll eventually learn a nearly endless amount of singletrack that is always being added to. no really long climbs but still very worth while.

Lysterfeild is a great park for this kind of stuff. There's the commonwealth track which is quite technically demanding (Up hill steps of corners yech) and is great for someone trying to beat their own times. There's alot of other tracks there too. There's some monster climbs and plenty of tight singletrack. Go to the rangers office near the lake and they have MTB maps that will help you out.

Yeah do that, there is heaps of singletrack out along the Yarra out that way. There is also the paddock, a little loop track, shorter than 5k though. But still loads of singltrack which you could piece togethor in your own loop.

For sure! There is some pretty good riding to be had down that way, all of which i would really really love to be able to ride right now. It just sucks that i'm so damn far away. :(

Blue Lake, behind Greenborough.
^^^please i did it once and what a waste...had to get off the bike so many times to climb super steep climbs and insane stupid river crossings.
Christmas hills has some brilliant singletracks, one of my favourite loops is out that way. check vicmtb's website for ride guides in the area. (and other areas)
