i remember a while back sombody mentioned upgrading the 5mm bolt used to hold the shock to the linkage for a 6mm item, but after asking a few fastener suppliers without much luck its time to consult the experts. any help would be greatly appriciated,

Yes I did it to my D8.

The bolt is an 8mm (6mm allen key) - stainless is good - TI better.

You also need new alloy adaptors or drill out old ones(buy the new ones) and wack a couple of DU bushes while you're in there.

What needs to be done is to enlargen the bolt hole(der) and spotface the hole for the bolt head - anyone with a mill should be able to do this with easy( I did mine with a dremmel :o )

Then it's worth 'helicoiling' the new thread - much tuffer!

Can't remember what it cost but a worthy upgrade from that pissy little original bolt.

I did this mode for a mate
what i need'ed
5.5mm drill bit an 6mm
6mm tap make sure you get it right because it's a bitch to helicoil aloy use cutting compound
high tensile 10.9 cap screw 6mm drill
lock tight
new shock bushing's i would change them you can get the from dirt works
drill
vice
hack saw

drill out the bushing's and non fastening side use the 6mm drill bit
drill out the old threed use the 5.5 drill bit
Tap the fastening side use cutting compound it will make it ezy'er
now with your bolt you need to get one with a threed that stops so its smooth on the bushings like no threed on the bushings you may need to cut the bolt down for frame clearance

it's not that hard don't cut corners use good tool's and good products

for the bolt try nepean bolt master there in sydney good guy's help full

could you please post some pics of the mod?
-my bottom shock mount is rooted -I think this is what you are talking about.
the thing is the original bolt is already a 6mm so I'm a little confused.
I'm also concerned by the shortage of material around the hole left to support it
cheers

You're right mate - stock bolt is 6mm diameter(5mm head)
Next size up is a 8mm diameter(6mm head)

I'll take some pics shortly

Here's some pics of the new bolt - guarantee it's a 8mm diam bolt.
There's just enough meat left around the bolt hole to do the job.
From memory Grip moded the bolt by shortening the bolt head so it would be flush or lower than the side of the link and also spot-faced the link for a larger bolt head.
Note the length of the blank shank of the bolt - no threads in the shock bush.
