Its the one little phrase that makes my blood boil. I'm forced to listen to commercial radio at work mostly nova and 2dayfm as thats what the boss/all the girls love and just about every single rnb, hip hop, rap song has that annoying little phrased tagged throughout, quickly followed by "ladies and gentleman!". Its so god damn frustrating! Anyone else have any pet hates of radio?

my pet hate...commercial radio picking up stuff from jjj, three months after release and pronouncing it as "brand new", "so hot right now" etc...but I avoid commercial radio like the plague ( i really cant stand the ads, let alone the music)...even jjj/fbi blows most of the time...I much prefer my mp3...feel sorry for anyone who has to listen to it against their will

I used to work in a shop where we had to listen to commercial radio and they did that. They would actually go a step further and say "you heard it here first". We used to ring the station every single time they did it and tell them the date that JJJ first played it. They got really stroppy with us and started call screening us :D

My pet radio hate: Canberra morning DJs, particularly the self absorbed twits on FM104.7. They are just so utterly stupid and think they are amusing.
I'll put on channel V or CDs in the background now, even morning TV like Sunrise is better.

I really like HAC(K?) on JJJ, that's pretty much the only radio I listen to these days.

Australian Radio has nothing, nothing! on US radio for shiteness. Even the stations that play half decent music most of the time have farkin annoying announcers and even more annoying ads that just go on and on and on. The worst is when the announcers are talking at each other and then you realise that they are actually waffling about some sponsor's product. Bastards.

College radio in the US isn't half bad, but if you are driving and not right near the college, you can't get reception.

(Oh yeah, I'm stuck here in the US (for work) at the moment.)

But on Australian radio stations: I did some work a couple of years ago based in a warehouse, and all day, every day they played 2MMM over the building's PA system. Arrrgh! That has got to be against some UN convention!

Sure, they might have a "no repeat workday", but they play the same farkin songs every farkin day! Plus this was during a Big Brother period, so every hour we got another update from the house. Shoot me, please!

I was subjected to 2Day fm on the bus the other day throught the roof speakers, and whoever the guy and chick are were waffling on about something.

They were waffling about doing something and feeling cool about it. Whoever the dorky bloke is said the following: "I like to do something which is new, as it makes me feel cool and hip. (Even though I know really, that I'm not hip, just like a JJJ listener)."

I wanted to punch through the speakers, and was VERY close to ringing or writing to the station to complain. Shithouse.

yeah Hacks great...Steve Kinane (spelling?) used to do the 9-12 shift and the show was pretty much a 3 hour version of Hack...It was awesome, but I think it probably took far too much work to put on every day...

I think Mark Colvin is the most annoying presenter on radio (He presents PM on ABC 702), Phillip Adams isn't far behind. Colvin writes his own scripts then fucks them up, & his voice is like fingernails on a blackboard.

Kyle Sandilands & Jackie (H)O should be forced to fuck then have a zulu warrior spear the both of them.

JJJ is good but the amount of station idents they have now is akin to advertising, & the quality of music is going down (imo), as witnessed in latest Hottest 100, it is becoming way too MOR/soft rock/commercial dance/new rock for my liking especially during the day. All the specialist shows at night though are still the ducks guts.

FBI radio 94.5 fm in sydney is probably the best & plays the most diverse music, but some of the presenters are so amateur itis embarrasing to listen to. 'Bass lines', 'Fat Planet' & 'Weekend hangover' show on a sunday morning though is fantastic.

'The Love Doctor', nights on mix106.5 is hilarious!! "I want to dedicate this song to Tommo, i love him soooo much, he's in Long Bay doing a 5 year stretch for armed robbery"

in canberra, as far as i can see there are 3, maybe 4 station worth listening to.

triple J, Raw FM (alot of cool music, old punk, aus hip hop, bassy stuff), 666 (ABC) and the one that reads the newspapers for blind people.

JJJ really need to give the 3hr 9-12 slot back to Steve Kinnane and get some intelligence back into the daytime line up. JJJ unfortunately know that most of their longtime, older listeners won't go anywhere else though, and the current format seems to be geared towards attracting kids from the commercial stations.

Unfortunately I can't see it happening, and I wouldn't at all be surprised if it gets privatised in the near future.

i lived in scotland for about 6 months. the only fm station you could get was bbc radio one. they played the same 8 songs all day, and they were shit songs, and all the locals thought it was farkin great.

i grew up in country victoria where we had a choice of 3SR or nothing. 18 yrs of am radio hell.

i spent a bit of time in north west tassie. 1 station of AM radio shite which broadcast horse/dog/trots racing for half the day.

and like you have said triple j has quite a few bad moments.

i don't turn the farkin radio on much these days as it is almost gauranteed to be shit or some asshole talking shit.

My pet hate? The Austereo Network. Period.
They all think they're hot shit, when they're really only warm poo...

The 'interview' between Jackie Hoe and Frenzal Rhomb about them kicking her waffling off stage still sticks in my mind.

The guys in the factories on either side of us have WSFM going most days... the same tired old stuff, day in, day out. In stereo.
To top it off, one of the older workers is completely tone deaf, but happily sings along out of time anyway.

Triple J is still bearable, but I'll agree that things have been going downhill for a while. Thank god for FBI.

I think Raw FM is available in some parts of Sydney, on 88.0 - feel free to correct me on this - but they seem to play foreign talkback during the day, only at night does the decent stuff come out.

If you're on or near a computer for a long time, some of the stations streamed through Winamp Radio can be interesting... there's stacks of them.

I agree, commercial radio sucks, I only ever listen to my own music on my computer or CD's in the car. Anyone who works for coles myer (at least in coles or bilo) will know that their radio station is the worse. Fine it may not technically be a radio broadcast but it pretty much consists of hits (or misses) from the 90s broken up with the same shitty adds for bilo or coles.

I can't believe I'll actually stick up for the BBC over here,

Of course there is the inevitable garbage on a few stations but some of the BBC channels are really quite good. They play my kind of stuff from the late 70's to now. Joy Division, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, The Fall, Inspiral Carpets etc etc. And who could forget the late great John Peel? I am also a closet Terry Wogan fan in the mornings.:o The local Essex radio is awful, the brits love their Pop and dance music, it makes me vomit.

I occaisionally stream JJJ from home but the decline even in just the last twelve months is appaling. Even worse after the shittest 100 ever. I was subjected to MMM for years at work and I feel it is responsible for the dumbing down of some of the Australian populace. It's easy enough not to listen.

In Melbourne we pretty much have:
101.9 Fox
100.3 Nova
105.1 Triple M
101.1 Mixx (I think?)
107.5 Triple J
104.3 Gold
and a lot of other more obscure ones that I never listen to. Fox is and always has been a steaming heap of shit. Nova started out almost alright, playing a reasonable variety of stuff, and the hosts were bearable, they've since gone downhill in a big way with some of the shittiest music on loop, and netted together by a group of totally fucking retarded hosts. Mixx is just some random POS that only plays the poppiest of pop music, and even out of that stuff I reckon they specifically look for music they know annoys me. Triple M used to advertise themselves as the "rock" station, now they just play old shit and it's sure as hell not "rock" anymore. Gold 104 is just the older 70s/80s/90s shit that geriatrics seem to like (and that Triple M have been trying to cash in on lately). Triple M's hosts all suck too. Like Nova, not funny, but overly enthusiastic self-centred wankers who just love to laugh at their own attempts at jokes. Triple J still has good programming, hosts that I actually like listening to, interesting/funny programs (Today Today, Hack, J and the Doctor etc), and they still set aside specific times to play more niche music. Who else has an equivalent to Full Metal Racket or Short Fast Loud? No other stations even PLAY that stuff, AT ALL. Yeah some people reckon it's becoming more commercial or whatever, I reckon that for the most part their stuff is 10x better than you'll find on other stations even when it is poppy crap that I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to. I'd say their audience might have changed a bit (going by the hottest 100 at least) recently but this is a conundrum any non-mainstream station is going to face: they provide alternative/niche music/programs that cater for a smaller audience, because nobody else does. They still have to try and promote their own station, and that means doing stuff that their audience, as a whole, likes. Notably a lot of Triple J listeners (myself included) are a bit elitist as to what radio stations people listen to, and we push other people to listen to it instead of Nova/Triple M/whatever. So they start listening to it at our behest and then over time, Triple J's audience increases and changes. Then we whinge that they're not playing stuff that's as good as it used to be... what were they going to do? Totally ignore what the (now-) majority of their audience likes to listen to? What if Britney Spears puts out a song that heaps of Triple J listeners like to hear, or is actually a half decent song (yes ok next I'll be suggesting the existence of an easter bunny)? Do they just not play it because they're supposed to not be mainstream?

Personally I still reckon Triple J shits all over the other stations (in spite of the hottest 100 turdburglary), from a height sufficient to allow said faeces to reach terminal velocity.

I didn't know there was any other radio station apart from Triple J. The reason I started on the J's all those years ago was because the are no ads and no stupid fucking sped up and commercial songs on it. I have smashed several radio's in the workplace for not being on JJJ ;).
If you come to me for a job, you should ask "how loud can I play JJJ ?" and you have a shoe in for a new job.

I've now found the digital TV boxes can give me a couple of jazz music radio channels. Better than pop music crap. Also for video and concerts footage, ABC2 is good also.

I still listen to JJJ a bit, but it's much more commercial (pop) lately.

I also found a community jazz channel, locked in to the car stereo 99.3 I think, I'll double check that number. This is Sydney.
