Hey folks, i am a little green in the ways of wiring and need some advice regarding a problem i am having!
In replacing the speaker wires for my home theatre system i have found that the plugs that go into the back of the machine require specific connectors. Being a Sony i am unable to buy the connectors anywhere else as they are only used by Sony. I can buy new cables, connectors and the connector housing for a handsome sum but i don't want to pay their ripoff prices!!
The problem in re-using the connectors is that they are crimped extremely tightly and i am unable to get them open without damaging them.
So my question is, am i best off soldering the new wires onto the existing connectors or using some sort of wrap around crimp to bind them together?
(please note that connectors i have seen elsewhere won't fit into the housing that the existing connectors sit in, they are very small and have a tongue locking thingamajig)
Any helpful advice would be absolutely brilliant! :)
Cheers, Pete.

Pete can you take a picture of the terminal & plug?
Sounds like the best bet would be to try using the original's & if the cable is long enough just snip & join the new cable to the cut length solder & sheild with electrical tape or heat shrink tube for a pro finish.

Second that. Cut the plugs off with about 4 cm of tails, carefully strip them using a sharpish knife and solder them on. Make sure you put the heat shrink on first, very common mistake to make in the heat of the moment :)

Cheers for the replies rob and Binaural!
Just one thing though, do i solder just the wires together or get some of the new wire onto the terminal and solder them together?

BTW, attached is a pic of the terminal, haven't got one yet of the housing.

I strongly suggest that you leave a pigtail of wire on the end of the existing plugs when you cut them off - it will be much easier to solder to and you don't risk distorting the plug with the heat.

Tip: leave a longer pigtail than you need, and strip all the insulation off it. That way, if you bungle your first soldering attempt you have room to move to fix it! My hobby used to be microcontroller electronics, so I speak from experience here :-)

Leave the terminal end & just cut about 60mm this will give you enough room to strip & solder the new cable..... DONT try to remove the existing cable on the terminal there is too much risk of damaging it! good luck dude
