I can't recall a time when red heads were ever persecuted, discriminated against or held to account over genetic traits. Therefore I can't see this issue having the same impact as racism or sexism. I think a thread like this can be easily interpreted as lighthearted and is being treated that way by everyone but yourself.

You shouldn't make fun of things that people can't help because it might hurt someone's feelings. Simple as that.

Not saying I'm taking offence to the thread or anything, but it got me thinking of why society believes that making fun of one group is ok, but not another. If this thread was linked to a site describing 'blackness' as a disease, saying that 30% of Negro's go on to live happy and productive lives etc, no matter how humerous, how long would it take before it got shut down?

I'm not saying it should be shut down either, but it is something that got me thinking.

It's completely contextual mate. If harm does not come of it, it is not a problem. I have yet to read/see/hear of any redheads taking offence at light hearted humour. Maybe blonde jokes go a little far at times, but I think the Kiwi jokes, Queenslander/NSW/Victorian, redhead type jokes have always been lighthearted, in expectation of a retaliatory joke and has never led to anyone being persecuted or discriminated against, which is intrinsic and the dominant element to the discrimination issue.

Life is not an absolute thing, it's all contextual. If people do take offence, I/we of course would have to consider altering our behaviour. But I've never seen this happen and will be very surprised if it does.
