I was taking apart my 2005 BoXXer Team before and then PLSHSHSSHSHSLSLSHSHSHSH, all of this Silvery/Black oil oozed out all over my hands...'Ah Shit'....

Now, I'm going for a ride tommorrow (7:45) and no shops will be open to pick up some fork oil....And i don't have any around here!

So! I was wondering, Do you think I could use one of the 2 bottles of red oil i found here:

4 Stroke lawnmower motor oil
Mobile Extra High Performance automatic transmission fluid

Neither of the bottles say the oil weight, So i don't know what's the go....

Would these oils work in the forks?

In all seriousness only 2stroke oil would work.

Well given that light transmision fluid / gear oil is about 80wt I dare say the extra high rpeformance stuff is atleast +100wt you might as well fill your forks with cement.

Two stroke might work, although I really doubt it would be any good for the forks, it may damage internal seals rendering the forks totally useless on the trail. As for weight- well your guess is as good a mine. I'd say atleast 30wt.

Do have a question though- why pull your forks apart the evening before a ride if you dont have any oil on hand- what did you expect to find?

Because i had some kind of strange noise in there, So i went in to check it out...and them my hand was coated in silver smelly oil.

Thanks for the input...I'll just try and scab some oil from the other riders.:p

It's not worth stuffing up a pair of forks for a days riding.

what on earth did you just say???
are there any sites with recommendations for what weight to use? i'm getting one of those free services that you get when you buy a new bike, and it includes fork oil changing.

ATF is a 5wt. mineral oil. It should actually work pretty well although it's unlikely to have the anti-foaming agents that suspension oils have, so there's a possibility it will cavitate if it foams up. Don't use engine oils - their standard weight is usually in between 20 and 60 so your damping will be terrible and you could probably even permanently damage your deflection plates in the damper.

Now why you would open up your forks without having a couple of bottles of oil sitting around amazes me

What amazes me even more is that someone COULD open up their forks and NOT expect to find oil.

I did expect oil...

I put my forks upside down, So most of the oil went into the uppers, But i had too much oil in them in the 1st place, So as a result quite a bit came out...Hence my imediate reacion of 'Uhoh'.....Then when i tipped the oils from the uppers into containers it oozed out, all silver and black with a terrible smell.

I could've put that back in, But i didn't think it would do my forks any good, That's why i just decided not to use any oil in the end....

I'll go on down to a moto shop today and get some.

(The post was a very rushed effort, i was pritty desperate to go for a ride on the DH bike, But i guess a bit of skatepark won't hurt).
