From experience Jamis make really good bikes. The Komodo 2.0 is no exception. The Komodo looks like it has some good components, it would be a really good all rounder bike. It would probably easier to get into riding with than the Giant STP 1. Although the STP range has quite a reputation, and a large portion of this website own one. The STP range offers value for money, and is probably more suited to dirt jumping than the Komodo. In the Norco range around the $1500 mark you could get yourself a Norco sasquatch. They are really nice bikes, also with good quality components. All these 3 bikes come with only 18 gears or less. If you wanted a more gears like 27 for example have a look at the Adventure series in Norcos website. Or some of the other range of Giant or Jamis bikes. Giant have some really good beginner bikes aswell.

For a starting bike, I would reccomend either a Norco Sasquatch or a Jamis Komodo 2.0. They would offer more range or variety of riding styles for whichever path you take into riding.

Well personally I reckon you should go for a Monty X-lite 221.... but only if you want to ride biketrials!

Mate, welcome to farkin and all that, but if you want any sort of serious advice worth listening too you really should give us heaps more info than you have.

From your username I'd say you were into jumping, but you really need to tell us exactly what sort of riding you want this bike for... also things like your height, weight, riding style, whether or not you're smooth or hard (on a bike - landings etc), whether or not you'd prefer a complete bike or frame only and of course your budget.

The folk here on Farkin are always willing to help, but the more you can tell us the more "useful" information we can give you.

Cheers

Edit - Damn, faceplant!!!!!!
