View Full Version : Roadie drivetrain
i was just wondering if a roadie drivetrein for dh or freeride or 4 x is a good idea
also which ????
105
dure ace
ultegra
cheers
We setting our team guys up with Tiagra gear (cassette and deraillier)on our '06 models. Strong affordable and relatively light! I'd be a bit wary of going too lightweight for obvious reasons as the roadie stuff just isn't designed for the rigors of DH racing.
The plus side is a good spread of ratios (12-25 I think) that doesn't jump too far between shifts and a short cage rear deraillieur to keep things as far away from harm as possible!
Some of the guys have run this combo before with great results. Also shifters are SRAM triggers.

I personally wouldnt run tiagra...
105 9 speed on a durace 9 speed cassette if possible.. and hell yeh if you can run sram shifters.
something like that if you can hook it up

In build quality equivelent:
Tiagra=Deore
105=LX
Ultegra=XT
Dura Ace=XTR
I'd go with Ultegra. Like XTR Dura Ace is a lot of extra money for a little bit of extra performance. Not a huge performance difference between 105 and ultegra but, in this case, the extra money is probably worth it.
Whatever you do - remember to get 9 speed and not the now-standard 10 speed. There's still plenty out there (for a while).

i ran a tiagra for a long time on my dh bike and never had a problem with it. i still have it actually and its so scratched up you can hardly read it, it has gouges in it bigger than i had in my frame and it still worked fine! not as flash as a 105 or ultegra though but thats about it!
also does anyone no if you can run roadie cassete with say an xt drler and it will have the same affect in shifting capability

Why not??? Aren't they compatible?? Have you experienced problems??
Cheers
You'll want a 105 Cassette, Dura-Ace Chain, 105 Mech, Sram Rocket/Attack shifter.
umm at the moment i got xt shifter, xtr chain, xt cassete and derailer, how will it run if just add cassete and derailer

100% agree.... its my exact setup though with deore triggers (obviously would upgrade so sram if could be bothered or had a problem with deore) and works unreal. mines copped a caining and still is sweet.
