Searched the web and can't find the length of the VP free bb shell. Anyone be able to measure/give me a quick answer?

From the VP Free Faq:
http://www.santacruzbicycles.com/vpfree/

What size bottom bracket should I use on my VP-Free?

This one depends on what cranks you are using. The 150 spacing requires a 55-57mm chainline, instead of a 47.5 to 50mm that you would use on a Blur or a Bullit, etc. Basically the chain rings should be 5 to 7.5mm further outside than typical.
With most ISIS cranks, you should use a 128mm spindle (73x128mm ISIS BB).
If you have any doubts what spindle length you need for the specific cranks you are using, call the crank manufacturer and ask what size spindle to use to achieve that 55 chainline. Just make sure you buy a BB for a 73mm shell!

you didn't search long enough ie. sc.com

anyway...73x128mm

I'm fairly sure VPfrees are an 83mm shell...?

*edit- yup: "Raceface now offers a version of the Diabolus/ Evolve DH that will work. You need the 83mm bb shell version, which offers a 57.5mm chainline. You also need the 73mm shell adaptor kit. The normal version of the Diabolus/Evolve DH/Atlas will work poorly due to improper chainline."

So you just need the 83mm shell for the better chainline. So there ya go.

Sorry folks, thatnks Gripper and Sov

EDIT: In relation to Scottmeisters post, so the bb shell IS 73mm, or 83mm? I am assuming/hoping 73, but I am a bit confused. Is the 83mm required for the right chainline, but then an adaptor to 'step it down' to 73mm shell, IE the right size?

Did you read what you posted? The 83mm version of the cranks are required to acheive the correct chainline, but the frame has a 73mm shell, hence:You also need the 73mm shell adaptor kit.

No shit. Hence why I said he needs the 83mm shell BB- I just didn't mention the adaptor which was already mentioned.

I was doing all this crap just a few weeks. Importer and santa cruz themselves gave the go ahead to shave the lug off the frame which is the reason for this 83mm BB bullocks. With this off, basically any external bearing crankset with a 55-57mm chainline will work with 73mm Etype BB. ISIS cranks don't require removal of this. Nore would the 83/73 race face kit, but for convience (busted bb?) I think its worth the time getting it done anyway.

Heres a pic with the offending material removed.

Was that done with a mill?

Guess SC have got to chastised for engineering a frame not to accept external bearing cranksets but at the same time congratulated for "giving the go ahead" for modification when they clearly state that external BB's are not the preferred set up.

Discussion about the fitment of external bearing crankset & the ridge can be read here> http://www.speedgoat.com/feature-vpfree.asp

J5ive looks like a little more metal was removed than required, I'd only have gone 1>2mm clear of the BB cup to avoid cutting into the bearing caps seat.

Anyways, so essentially I can fit an xt m760 crankset, if I have the balls to remove some metal.

Thanks for sharing.

Its going to depend on the size of your BB face tools cutting edge. If I had a choice I would have cut less. In any case, I very much doubt its going to be an issue, the cap only adds to seal the bearing a little. The gap left is only fine. Most frames don't offer any such extra protection.
