6" front, 0" back,
i used to ride a 4" fork on a xc hardtial(the one in my avatar), i think the biggest huck i did on that was about a 7 foot drop and 10 foot gap.
hardtials are a lot cheeper, if i had the money i would get a banshee chapparel 7" rear(it comes with ether a fox or manitu, not sure) and maby a manitu travis (i think there 7") or if marzochi makes 7" single crown forks then id get one of them,
7" is about the max id go, any more and it's to hard to peddle.

im getting a norco atomik it has 170 mill on the front and back,
the forks are marzochi super t's and the rear shock is a fox dhx-3 pro pedal.

2004 Iron Horse SGS team, 7" on the front and 8.25 on the back. I use all my travel from time to time, but generally I am pretty happy with the amount I have (mostly DH and a bit of urban tomfoolery when I feel like it). The rear has a Manitou Swinger 6-way, which does help make the travel feel bottomless, but the Boxxer teams on the front are not nearly so mannered.
I'd like an extra inch on the front, since the Boxxers can get a bit rough when you are right off the brakes down a fast, rough chute. However, I would probably not like the extra height at the front, since I like to hit berms fast and low on the bike and taller bikes I have ridden feel a bit baulky doing this.

I use about 9 inches in the rear and 7 inches up front through a Fox Vanilla RC and 03 Jnr T's. I want to upgrade the Jnr's to something more race ready, if they go over 2 months without service the speed spiking is almost unbearable on rocky tracks (damn my like Adelaide has quite a few of these :p)

i ride a ironhorse 7point7 ..
at the moment i am running a DHX5.0 on the rear (7inch) and marzocchi 66r (7inch) on the front .. its an awesome bike for hucking .. use most of the travel, less when you absorb it more ..
cheers
i run 6" front. im on a hardtail so obviously no rear. it's not about how much travel you have, its about how smooth you are at big stuff. a guy i know hits over 20ft with mz comps... ew. another guy uses dirt jumpers for 30ft+ because they are hella stiff, it just depends how comfortable you are with big jumps/drops/stepdowns.

how much would you guys and gals recommend as a good ammount of travel on a freeride hardtail?

Depends what frame it is really. Most HT frames aren't designed to take too much travel up front. The had angle slackens and puts too much stress on the head tube.
But 5". I would say 130mm is a good amount. I wouldn't go over 6"

Ive got 200mm 888 ons the front an i bottom out sometimes on a dh corse and 9.5 inches on the rear which im yet to use all of ive only really used like 3quarters so far

Old ride had 7inchs front and rear, Via a 5th element rear shock and custom internaled 03 boxxers. Would bottom out a little bit hitting rocks fast (bloody Adelaide rocks....again! lol) But i liked to run my suspention really soft with slow rebound.
New ride (will be here in 3 weeks! :D) has 8inchs on the front via Manituo's new Travis Tripple insintric Ti's and 10 inchs on the back via Manituo's new Revox! Can't wait to hit trails on it, and those rocks.... Hold up... WHAT ROCKS! ;)

Hardtail - 150mm Dj2s only ever bottomed the stupid things out about 4 or so times over 15 months.
Dually - 8 inch front, 9 inch rear, bottomed out the front 888 a number of times but yet to bottom out the rear.
I normally attempt most of the things I do on my dually on the hardtail... just for the sake of it.

200 on the front and 9 on the back of my stab deelux,it runs 888s and a fox dhx 3.0 with pro pedal.........:D
I have an 05 norco hard tail with marzochhi 66r's 170 mm of travel, there super plush and quality fork but 170 mm is a bit overkill maybe 150 mm would be better.

REALLY plush suspension is MAD for dh but when it comes to hucking, youre better off going softer on the back, and a little stiffer on the front. Seals blow if they have too much pressure on them, so go a little stiffer.

Until this week I used the entire inch or so the front and rear tyres offered (sometime a few extra mm of rim - but that gets expensive). Now I’ve got 9inchs rear 8 front on top of what the tyres and rims have to offer. SMOOOOOTH!!!

I don't know a whole lot about what different settings achieve, i just take what i have and ride off stuff. I can't understand why anyone wouldn't use all the travel available for hucking anyway. Its a different story if you're riding up as well, but for going down.
I have 6.3 inches on the rear, and 6.2 or something on the front.

Shocks also blow when they are bottomed out hard repeatedly ;)

No matter what style of riding you do you should be bottoming your suspension occasionally during a ride. The best place to start is by setting you sag to suit the typr of riding you will be doing.
I run about 40% in the rear for DH at Thredbo where there are not many jumps but plenty of high-speed bumps and rocks. When I ride the freeride lines in Jindy I usually put on a different spring, 50lbs heavier, and run about 30% sag. For the front I run no low-speed compression but a few clicks of high-speed for DH and about half my low-speed and all my high-speed for freeriding.
For freeriding you should also slow your rebound down a few clicks to allow your forks to fully absorb big landings and not pitch you off the bike.

hahahaahahahaha yer i second that dougy. some little kid was screwing round with my bike and he turned my rebound up as high as it would go. i got back on and hit a drop and nearly got flug off. i run mine about 4 clicks from the slowest

8 inches of sweet Shiver travel up the front and 11 inches of 6 way goodness on the back. I use all of the fork travel intentionally and I've never bottomed the rear out. Dabomb Projectile......travel and stability.

hey dude i have 170mm on the front with 10w oil and super stiff 9inches on the back and i bottom out the back a bit. but the front is heaps.
norco a-line with dhx shock and 888 forks
if it's a drop to flat all of it if thers a landing 1/2 of it and for jumps just a bit
nothing mad

I try to tune my suspension so it is very progressive, and comes close to bottoming out when doing my expected riding. I never tune it so it actually does bottom out, since I like to leave a bit of room for unexpected obstacles, and stuff ups on my part. Sometimes I fear I'll blow the seals too... Especially since I'm running 30 mL more oil in each leg than the fork came with.
By making the suspension progressive, I get great small bump performance without bottoming it out all the time.
Finally, when I'm riding, I try to use as little of the suspension as possible.
