The STP range was classesd as best dirt jumpers and value bikes by Australia Mountain Biking. They are good bikes for beginers to intermediate riders. With quality components: Marzocchi Forks, Hayes Brakes, Kenda tyres, etc. I would say get it if you can afford it. If you can't afford it get it second hand. If you can get it second hand then save your money until you can!

as has been said they are great value for money, though if you are going to be doing freeride on it then have a look at the norco shore series or the jamis komodo's as they are better for freeriding/downhill(imo)then the stp series, having said that i have seen some people use them for dh/fr and they seemed to be quite good.
have a look at this site, www.mtbr.com , its full of reviews on all things mtb.
