I recently bought a secondhand XT hydro lever. The problem is, that when I pulled off the top cap, it would appear that the little stainless steel insert that covers one of the oil holes has become displaced. I usually would just pop it back into place, but I don't see how this is done. I understand how the little insert is meant to sit on a deore lever, but XT's are a different design. Also, if I leave it out, will this affect the proper working of the lever? I assume so. I will post pics once my camera charges, but I think someone will know how to fix this, and what I'm talking about. I really just need to know where to reseat it, how, and over what hole.

cheers.

Hey Red Rocket. I'll have a look at the lever I've got left and see if I can glean anything from that. I'll let you know in a couple of hours.

Thanks mate. The deore lever I have looks as if the insert sits in there pretty lightly, so it more than likely just got knocked a bit in transit.

Here ya go. I hope these show enough.

Looks like they're just pressed in.

im not clear on the problem here....can you not take the lever off to change it? if so, and its nayhting like my Deore then squeeze the brake lever in. now look from the front angle of the bike and you'll see a small (2mm ithink) allen key hole. undo that and your lever should come off. only if that was the problem.

He's not trying to take off the lever. Just trying to put that little metal insert back in the right place.

Hmmm, that's kinda cool info though. I'm just going to run off and look at my Deore levers now.

All the metal grate does is stop liquid squirting into your eyes when you pump the lever while bleeding.

If you've ever bled with a grimeca lever (and i'm sure many other brands) you'll know exactly what I mean. The hole that is covered is the hole that lets the fluid back into the resovoir after releasing the lever, and usually it shoots out with some force. The grate merely displaces the fluid to the left and right so you can pump to your hearts content while bleeding and not have to partially cover the resovoir to stop the return fluid squirting up and out.

It shouldn't be too hard to pop back into place, but if for some reason it's damaged you can just omit it, and half cover the resovoir with the cap or bladder while you're pumping after bleeding to remove air bubbles.

If it's still in shape, just check a deore lever for which hole is covered (left or right) and copy that.

Hope that covers it!

Thanks for that uDi and Martin, all sorted now. Was a five minute jobbo with index finger and thumb.
