i'm looking at getting a Orange 224 once the new shipment arrives
in the next week or so and have a choice of rear shocks
Manitou swinger, 5th element or Fox DHX5.0
I am leaning towards the 5th element only because it's the only shock I have ever run on my bikes and the official Australian 5th service centre Neezy
is based in Brisbane where I live, so it's good for servicing and spare parts.
Apart from that does anyone have an opinions from experience
which shock is best suited on a 224. or any of the Orange DH bikes.
cheers

It has been mentioned that Progressive are pulling out of the MTB market.
This rumor becoming truth would lead me to use a DHX.
Having used both, IMO DHX is better regardless of the above mentioned info

Progressives MTB stuff is now back on their website
but definitely worth thinking about that too

i have ridden both the dhx 5 and the top of the line 5th element. but i find that the dhx feels so much more alive, it is amazingly plush and gives the feeling of endless travel. if it was upto me i would go the dhx in a heartbeed.
but if you have heaps of money look into avalanche, its like a moto rear shock, and can be rebuilt at any moto shop, its custom tuned to your riding style and its pretty bling, the only down side is it weighs about 1kg.

take your pick of rear shocks:D

Get a DHX for sure...
Fox suspension is always built just right...

Swinger 4way gets my vote for it's reliability and excellent backup service.
Support at most of, if not all Nats rounds is a handy bonus too

My 224 just came and I'm going to be running a manitou 6 way until the new manitou "revox" shock lands. One of the lightest coil shocks on market... Come stanard with Ti spring to.

im riding a 224, and the only 2 shocks I was considering were a DHX air and a DHX5.0 coil. I went with the coil and will eventually get a ti. spring for it. The shock can be dialed in super well and is lighter, also with coil you have preload over air but you are just looking at coil shocks so just got with the DHX it feels great at highspeed and pedals super well.

looks like 5th's are off my list then,
the 224's come stock with Manitou swinger 4 way
but I have a choice of a the DHX5.0 at the moment
I'd have to say the DHX5.0 is going to be the choice over the swinger 4 way
or do the swinger 4 ways perform really well ?

Defiantly go DHX! I’ve had both and the DHX feels and works better than a Swinger IMO...

Put a Cane Creek double barrel or avalanche chubbie on. Don't weight much more but have a greater reliability (the avy anyway)
I'd have to say the DHX5.0 is going to be the choice over the swinger 4 way

Go with the DHX.
If cost is an issue, the swinger 4-way works a treat (i've been running one for the last year or so) and once setup right they work and feel great. From what i've ridden the swingers seem to have the 5ths beat in terms of smoothness too.
The DHX is smoother again, and you can set it up to not have any of that platform harshness, but even with the propedal turned up they feel pretty good. If you've got the option, then go for it.
