The original Bontragers on my Bruiser are starting to look pretty average so Im looking at getting some new tyres when I pick my bike up from the shop early this week after getting my new forks and brakes.

However I have absolutely no idea about tyres these days after getting back into mountain biking after an 8 year hiatus. All I remember was the IRC Missile was the big thing back then, or at least I think it was....

Ive done a bit of research and have read that Tioga have issues with sidewall strength and from what I can understand Maxxis seem to be doing everything right.

Basically the Bontragers I have right now are 26 x 2.4s. I dont want to go bigger nor do I really want to go any smaller than 2.25s. Most of my riding involves going up hill, then having a lot of fun coming back down along. So I pretty much do it all.

What kind of Tyres could you recommend for both front and back that would be suitable for my style of riding keeping in mind I have a maximum of $140 to spend but would prefer to stay under $100 if possible.

Cheers

a 2.5" maxxis tyre is about equiv. to a bontrager/michelin 2.3ish anywho.

Hm, if I were you I would be considering Maxxis High Rollers, Larsens, and Minions, depending on exactly how you ride- you really didn't specify much. Personally, I love the way Hot S Michelins grip, but they are a touch expensive for your budget. Meh, tell us what kind of terrain you're riding so we can at least make a proper suggestion. :)

Maxxis Larsen TT 2.35inch. (2.1inch is still pretty wide)

Terrain is typical of Townsville. Rocky and dry. I spose I do a fair bit of 'cross country' and some light downhilling. Also frequent the dual slalom track we have up here at the moment.

So I guess grip for the rear to avoid slipping as much on climbs, and grippy on the front for cornering and stuff on the way down.

Once in a while LTR gets some things right.. hehehe

Yeah definately go the LARSENN TT's front and rear 2.4 is avaliable in a downhill casing, which is dual ply bassically means sidewals are extra thick so you can run at lower pressures.

They are about 55 to 65 from memory so its a goood price too.

ive run them and minions and high rollers and imo, the larsenn is the prefect comprimise between grip and speed and bein much lighter as well for almost every terrain.

Its strange its not as popular as it should be... perhaps its because the tread pattern doesnt look "mean", for the minions looks kinda sexy.. 2.5 on rear and 2.7 mmmm poserish

There's some Larsens on phantom for a good price.

These would also be worth a look. If they're anything like my Vapors they should be a great tyre. A bit cheaper too.

And I have heard good reports of the Verticals too.
