View Full Version : Confidence = 0
Hey Guys,
At the moment im riding like a absolute girl, actually worse! I am just not hitting any shit i usually would. I built a new bike up over a fair period off time and hadnt ridden much. I got my new bike and tested it out at bmx tracks and dirt jumps and havent really hit stuff i usually would as i have had a few tiny close encounters and stacks in the get comfortable stage on my bike! I just want to get out of this mess and ride like i used to its pissing me off.
Cheers Cam

On the upside, 0 confidence = 32 teeth :)
I recommend getting gloves, shin pads, kneepads, a full face helmet, and arm pads.
Once you have these, ride with a couple of friends, with a girl or two watching.
Problem solved.
Cheers,
Arpit

I'm also like this sometimes. Out riding and i'll hit some big ones on my bike then a few days later I would go up to it and pussy out, but then say why am I like this now I did it before no problems?. For me it's just about what mood im in, if something bad happend that day or whatever, but just go out and give it a go!

just ride thats all i did you will slowy get back into it. what i did to help was just hit the smaller jumps and work on smoothness and stuff then work into the bigger stuff.

i rekon the best way to do it is to hit whatever you want to hit first and not wait till later in the day because then you will be like hmm ill just hit it tomorrow. Also if you wait a while you start to think about it way to much and start having bad thoughts about what you are about to hit.
hope this helps:rolleyes:
i worked myself into a similar situation where after not riding for a while you don't hit stuff,
you just need to get out there a ride as much as you can
find some jumps that you think are easy then hit those up.
don't even think about it just do it

Been there, done that, mainly from not riding. Best thing to help me was consistently riding for a few weekends and following mates that you normally ride with. You feel comfortable in their skills and you know your limits. You'll be back ripping it up in no time.

I've been the same lately especially with DJing. I spent most of my summer riding Thredbo on my DH bike and now that I get back on my DJ bike I can't seem to hit the jumps I used to. Even on my DH bike I've been balking at jumps I've hit hundreds of times. Big floaty jumps are no problem it's just poppy doubles that have me screwed especially when I don't have that 8" of stuff-up insurance.

well i know that we all go through it,its riding.for me besides the normal woossing out because of either crashes or injuries and other similar things,i find that because i dont have the money immediatly to replace parts if things break, that holds me back aswell.

try going on a big ride ie. lots of people and good riders, that builds your confidence up aswell.

I find if I ride all day and just start off slowly and keep riding constantly, by the end of the day I can do stuff just like that. It is the best feeling. just keep riding constantly and step it up every so often.

agreed. i used to ride with one mate or two. and it just doesn't get you psyched up because it feels too lazy and relaxed. which is fine unless you aren't doing anything. riding with a lot of riders with mixed skill is a really good confidence builder. there'l be people that will be doing things you will never do but then there's others who are only starting, so you can go at your own pace.
another way of overcoming something is first to look at a jump/drop/stepdown/step up/curb as you normally would to check it out, and when you line up to start your run in, forget about anything that could happen, just pedal. a couple of metres of pedalling and you switch off and don't think about it. its just important to get rolling as soon as you can.
also try taking friends who don't ride so they can watch. or even better a girl or two. because obviously you want to look good so thats also a confidence booster. take a camera too.. so if you do take a fall you can show everyone how... 'hardcore' you are. its a win win situation :)

i think i try big stuff when im just with one or two mates then when im in a really big group. But when your just riding then a big group is absoulty awesome for building confidence for trying those big things.
Any one whos seen nastys world will have heard this before but cory said "the best way i get confidence back and used to my bike after a big crash is just riding anything, instead of getting a lift or driving to the skate park or dirt jumps just ride there..." i recon it is the best solution just get some kilometers under your belt on ur bike and it will come.
An other thing is build up to what you wanna do get smooth and consistant on the small sets then build up and the same with tricks do small ones before you throw the biggest one you can do.
Thanks guys, better get out on my bike and get going i guess, Keep the advice coming its good to hear!

I'm pretty sure this happens to every mtn biker. Some days you hit stuff. some days you dont.

I find when i ride and ski something ive never done before these things help.
Train in with someone and follow them and if they make it youll make it.
Watch people hit it before you.
If all those fail hit it with an excess of speed then there are no worries about not clearing.
Or after ive eaten shit doing something, get back up immediately and do it again without a second thought.

Best thing to do is just go someplace with lots of jumps of varying skill level, and then you can set your self a target to do by the end of the day and work your way up to it.
I know all about having little to no confidence...
coming back from a broken arm in a cast for 6 weeks i was on my bike at the local bmx track. the doc had said that my arm was still not fully healed but was safe enough to be out of the cast as long as i didn't do anything strenous... well being the first time on the bike in six weeks i was sooooo pumped, but was on the other hand i had to be careful of my arm, so i thought i would take it slow and see what i could do without pushing it, tabletops etc. so it was going all good for the first half an hour or so, so i thought i would have a at the next step up: a double. i was so pumped that i was flying by the time i got to it. as soon as i was it the air i started going sideways and i was also going way to far to land on the landing. i hit the landing on my side somewhere near the bottom, covering my back with a nice big gravel rash, and completly distroying my helmet all at once. the only fortunate thing about this was that my semi-broken arm was intact and i now had an interesting story...
hope this helps
