go gold labels i reackon for sure
i reackon they would be a lot better, you dont need any of the adjustments that pikes have except if you are going to be doing a fair bit of 4x they would be useful

A guy i know has gold labels and says they are shit and that they feel just a tiny bit better than stances, so id say PIKES considering the reputation they have.

but they arnt meant to be a really plush fork they arent fo dh or anything so you dont need a really nice feeling fork
a mate if mine has a set of goldlabels and i reackon they feel good and dont pikes cost a whole lot more just for things that arnt needed

as an owner of beautiful Pike 409's i would say go pikes cos they are just hot!
they dont hav anything unnecessary, the travel adjustment is bloody awesome, means u can change em whenever and wherever u want, and u can do watever u want, some 4X tracks need more travel than others, and some DJ's need more travel as well.
i cant say i've tested gold labels, so i wont comment on them, but you might wanna take into account the options that open up for you wen riding Pikes.
or u could just test ride both of em :p

For DJ/street I'd say Gold Label, but with 4X as well I'd be leaning towards the Pike. Travel adjust would be handy for 4X. I suppose it depends how serious you are about racing.
What's the axel-to-crown height of Pikes if you wind them right down?

I've got 06 Pike 426s on my 4x/jump bike and they are very well suited to both. If anyone tries to tell you Pikes won't handle dirt jumping tell them to go check out Gee Atherton's jump at a French ski resort 100 ft to flat and he destroyed his wheels but the Pikes were fine. From my own experience the Motion Control damping is awesome for this kind of fork. If you want to go trail riding you open up the damping and yes the fork is plush and responsive. For 4x and jumping you lock it up and adjust the floodgate. This stops the fork bottoming on the face of jumps but still using the full travel when you hit the landing. I weigh 88kgs and run a firm spring and adjust the damping to suit what I'm riding at the time.

if you only want 80mm you have no choice. but if you are talking 100mm+ i like pikes. i have both.
Gold Label 80mm - i have replaced seals once(damper) and the whole damper assembly in the forks once. I hate the manitou 20mm solution. but if you want 80mm you have fuck all choice.
Pikes - i have 454 dual air 'U' turns. very impressed. only had for 3 weeks. they only go down to 110mm so they are only just short enough for the bike they are on. the rock shox 20mm solution is brilliant. ( i have 4 brands of 20mm axle forks. the rock shox 20mm quick release is best, the manitou hex is worst.)

I have 05 SLs that I bought late last year and they are so solid. I run them at 95mm for DJ & street. I.
I agree with fatnold, the 20mm problems with other forks have been sorted by Rock Shox.
Most of the guys I ride with have had Manitou forks and they all seem to get a creeking noise in the steerer, annoying...

ive own a set of gold labels and they are awesome i really like them, the stock spring is pefect nice and stiff but soft enough to take out little bumps.
either would be fine so just choose whateva you want
gold labels are cheaper though...

I would if i knew where to find it... *hint*
If i were you i would get the pikes. If the gold labels are anything like Stances i wouldn't go near them, i was one of the unfortunate ones to buy them when they first came out, (well sort of) being the n00b of riding that i was at the time all i could see was there stealthy black colour. And now i am suffereing for my lack of reaserch, i could'nt count how many times i have bottomed them out. IMO go the pikes, just look at how many people use them.

Any fork will bottom out if it's not running the correct spring for your weight. I bottomed my Pikes until I put a stiffer spring in them. From the factory forks are usually sprung for 65-75kg riders.

you shouldnt bottom them out if your smooth i dont recon cause one of my mates would be about 80kg+ and he has stock pikes and his have never bottomed out

Hinga and Inverted,
The stock Pike springs are set for an up to 72kg rider and if you are over 80kgs you will have bottomed them at some point but probably wouldn't have felt it due to the Motion Control making them feel bottom less.
My forks would blow through the travel just hitting corners with the standard spring and the fork fully active. With the fork locked and the Floodgate set for my weight they wouldn't blow through the travel in corners but would still go to the bottom when jumping. It's got nothing to do with being smooth or not it's a product of spring rates and damping characteristics.

Oh and the pikes are 06 pretty good deal if you ask me. I bought forks from them and they arrived in 3 days
and for Gold Labels go to http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Categories.aspx?CategoryID=613
Oh and for about 600buks if you look you can pick up a pair of shermans that have travel adjust from 80mm to 130mm, this is what i use and the 80mm setup is so firm it aint funny and the 130mm setup is so nice and responsive i love my forks.

i am running at my pikes (409) at 80 or probaly less travel just playing with the air moastly negative air and they are soo nice they are pretty stiff and have held up awsom for like 8ish months of hard riding and i had djs and they cracked in 6 months and they are MENT to be really strong which says alot to me, i also had sherman flicks reduced to 110 they felt good but where abit sticky and the steerer started creaking and it was really annoying so i sold them and got pikes
i rode a pair of gold labes and dident like them much they felt and looked like a pair of stances they where verry stiff tho
get pikes they are a wayyy more versitile fork, the travel ajust is good if you ever want to hit stuff where you need just abit more travel and the lock out is awsom for riding in the skatepark and comuting
have you thought about some marzicchi z1s or then new all mountain forks i dont really like their lower series of forks but the higher z1s look awsom and they are easy to reduce to a lower travel, altho i havent herd much about the new all mountain forks
(sorry if ive spelt rong im a bad speller sometimes:( )
PIKES ...IMO

i recon stps are ghey and dont deserve pikes, and pikes are never going to be anything like stps (mainly cos they are forks not frames :p )
and the reason they hav such a good rep is not because they come on a mobile-posing-seat (a.k.a stp) but because they are such a mad fork and everyone that has them just wants to share their joy and love of their amazing forks with the world
but hey....thats just my 2 cents

i have met people that have gold labels and think they are the best but most of the time if not all the pikes kick the gold lables arse. there is so much you can ajusdt and alot of my friends think they are just to plush. they have made comments about them snapping but they will only snap if huckers get hold of them and take them off drops which is not what they are designed for. PIKES ALL THE WAY

for what u r looking at doing id have to go for the pikes. From the pairs of gold labels i have ridden they dont feel like anything special, and with no adjustment u really have to maintain them well to keep them feeling good. I had a pair of pikes and i have to say they r rad forks. its worth paing that little bit extra and getting pikes cos u getting more adjustment and more plushness for your buck.
