Enter.
Put in leave form. Wait, resist temptation to train.
Put bike, tent, sleeping bag & every piece of cycling clothing you own into car drive to Canberra on Friday. Set up tent, eat sleep.
Get up, ride.

Do not forget the wet weather gear, and the warm clothes. And the spray bottle to clean the bike off. And, unfortunately, something to lock your bike up with, as some poor bloke lost his bike last year. And a noose for bike thieves (I am joking).

Who's joking?

Actually, one of the poor folks who had their bike stolen was a 6 foot 3 policeman who wasn't very happy. If the pi5sant miscreant had happened to be caught in the act I believe an appropriate level of "restraining force" probably would have been applied. (and who out of any of the bystanders would have sided with a 5hithead bike thief?)

Wet weather gear is a must, as is cold weather gear (Ahh, I remeber 03 when the mercury dropped to minus 7 and the Camelbak hoses froze up half way around the lap...) (I'm not kidding)

Anyway, to the question at hand:

I'll be in a mixed six with 5 lovely ladies. Working title for the team is "Token Boy" and I may end up having pink tulle and a tiara inflicted on me by my teammates I fear...

At this stage, I'm confirmed in a team of 3. We're not taking the whole thing too seriously, however, so we're prepared to look into going as a team of 4 if someone out there needs a group of relaxed piss-heads to be part of during the race.

Only 2 provisos:
1 - The team name. Some people may not want to race under a "shop" name, but I have to look after my sponsor.
2 - You gotta have your own lights and be prepared to do some of the night laps. At this stage, it looks like I'll be carrying most of the night burden, but this is so I get the "honour" of doing the final lap.

Haven't been to the Mont yet and it will in fact be my first 24hr race (done lots of 8 or 12 hour races...), so I'm pretty excited.

See you there.

Well I was just about to post saying I was looking for a team. What you describe sounds like it might suit me. Team of 4, relaxed piss-heads, not too serious... that sounds about right. Provisos 1 and 2 - no problem there. I have gear, tools, and transport.

I've done the 04 and 05 kona 24 hrs in 6 man teams. I'm not particularly fast, but not hopeless either. On the Redesdale course I tend to get between 1 hour and 1.10 laps if that gives you an idea.

Anyway very keen to race so shoot me a PM if interested.

Sketch plan at the moment is a team of six - two of whom will also be on announcing duties at any time. Team 30 Hours of Wibble is just waiting for final approval from the orgamanisers.

I got recognised by someone I met while riding home the other night. "I know your voice from somewhere..."

If the plan comes together you won't have to put up with quite as much of me this year. ;)

Mixed pairs isn't that bad - just get yourself a race plan together with some contigency built in and you'll be fine.

Just be prepared for a few egos late at night and early in the morning. My teammate Miss Jayne and another girl she was lapping with encountered a particularly bad one last year which spoiled her event in some respects.....

Just be prepared for a few egos late at night and early in the morning.Yeah, there's always one or two dickheads, but they really are a minority - and it tends to be the wannabe fast guys. They are just fast enough to let them think that the 5 seconds it takes to get around a slower rider will really affect them overall.

Just be prepared to let people through when you can (don't stop for them though), and just ignore the dickheads as much as possible.

I'm doing it for the first time this year. I think I am in a six man team which will be much easier then the possible four man. What are some general tips for a race like the mont?

Don't do it! It's like Hotel California: you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.....:D

Nah seriously it's awesome but ONLY if you prepare properly. Make sure your bike is sorted (mechanically and in terms of seat height, setup etc) BEFORE you head to the race. Take heaps of spares and a well-equipped tool box. If you can wrangle a work stand that's a huuuuuuuuge bonus.

Make sure you take enough clothes to cater for all weather conditions: from the Sahara in high Summer to th Arctic Circle, and ll points in between. Ensure you have a great sleeping bag and access to an open fire, they rock!

Most importantly though, get your nutrition sorted. Do loads of research and make sure you pack plenty of food. The way you eat IMO is the most important factor and will ultimately determine not only how fast you are on the bike and how well you recover between lasp, but mot importantly ho much you ENJOY the event, which is what it's all about. Unless of course you're on a single speed, which is just plain silly and you're obviously fuvked in the head.;)

Hope this helps.

1. Have fun (This is the number one thing to remember, if you're not having fun stop!)
2. Relax (helps with 1))
3. Make sure your bike is in working order
4. Check your lights are in working order
5. Take every piece of cycling cloting you own (At various times during the
event you are going to be hot, cold, freezing, wet, dry, fried)
6. Have fun
7. Take a variety of food, you'll never know what you are craving for
8. Those gas heater things are really, really good
9. Coopers Pale Ale is the nectar of the gods
10. Have fun

dont we need the energy from high sugar levels???? and wouldnt junk food be baad because our systems wouldnt be able to process it in time for the next lap and mack us feel like shat???

So... any tips... what should we eat ? after our lap??? fluids?? water good enough of should we go for drinks with more eletrolites? as for training???? should we?

It's all a bit of a personal preference, so the best thing you can do is do some hard training rides after eating various different types of food and see which ones make you puke and which ones make you go harder.

My personal preference is a massive pasta dish the night before (pasta with tuna works well for me), lots of cereal with lots of honey and a little milk before the race, 75%/25% intake of water/sports drink and regular power barsevery 2 hours or so. If I need something substantial during a break, I'll wolf down a can of that tinned milky rice (whatever it's called...) that you can get from any supermarket. And for some reason, if I'm really f&*(ed, I also love the sweet juicy-ness of a cold orange, but I don't like 'em that much the rest of the time...

As for junk food, I know people that swear by cold pizza as a great way of keeping relatively healthy levels of cereals, vegies, meat & salt in their systems, but I'd never rock up to a race with anything from McDonald's. Sugary stuff just makes me light up quickly and crash just as quickly, so I tend to avoid the lollies, etc...

Thats normal.... if you read the pre entry info it said it would do that if your licence expired between now and the race... and that the $15 would be refunded when you showed your card.

I'm guessing they got burned with too many people giving licence numbers that were expired. It's hooked to the MTBA database.

Mine did the same thing too. Talking to the organisers this morning it appears that the licenced rider database supplied by MTBA may not be that up to date. As stated on the 24hr website you will get a refund for the day licence if you have a current licence at the time of the event.
