Hi all.

I know I've had a couple of threads before this with problems with my new forks (sorry) but I've had a search on this, have found some things on it but all of their problems were solved and that doesn't help me much.

Quick background first. Bought new forks (06 boxxers) and got the mid (flat) crown with them. When I bought them I looked at the rockshox website which says you need a headtube stack height of 160 or less to run them. Mine being around 159, thought it would be ok.

Now I have found out (after I bought them) that it is actually 150mm headtube stack height. :( So at the moment, flat crown is useless.

The headtube itself is 130mm long (SC Bullit) and obviously, the headset adds a extra 29mm.

What I was looking for is a headset that is strong / reliable / nice (wouldn't hurt if it looked good either :p ) that has a stack height of 20mm or lower.

Do they make them that size at all?

If not, can someone fill me in with how strong/well internal headsets are please?

Thanks for your help.

Jordan.

Internal headsets will not work on a standard headtube frame.
Also just a note, Internal and Integrated headsets are two different things.
Integrated is where a bearing sits directly in the reamed section of the headtube on your frame.
Internal is where you have a super low stack cup that is pressed into the frame, and the bearing sits inside that cup.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Sorry for all of these newbie questions.

So are the intergrated headsets ok? Will I notice any difference in performance and will they last? (freeride and DH).

Also, Will they actually lower the stack height or won't it change anything.

Sorry... I'm kind of lost here. :(

You won't be able to run either in your frame if you have a standard head tube.

Integrated headset needs headtube with integrated bearing seats, internal needs to go in a headtube large enough to take the cups and a standard 1 1/8" headset goes in a standard headtube, you can't mix and match.

you can not use an integrated headset on that headtube, you must use a standard one.

Get yourself the drop crown. You will have no problems selling the flat.

Looked it up on google.. apparently its the same as the intergrated, which I can't use.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.. only searched on google.

the shortest conventional headset i know of is the FSA orbit Xtreeme

http://www.fullspeedahead.com/fly.aspx?layout=product&taxid=65&pid=172

at 25.5mm it's about 5mm shorter than most. Thing is you have to the bearings somewhere.

have you considered facing your head tube down a little shorter ?

Thanks for the info everyone.

I did. And they decided it's not worth it. I'll just get the drop crown and then buy some new forks later on.

2006 888 rc2x - should have no problems there.

Does anyone know if I can do a direct swap with a shop or rockshox themself for the crown?

I called a local store today - they said the drop crown cost $250, and I get a $70 trade for the flat crown.. even though its new.

I know I can trade with someone else privately, just I would rather a new one and would be much easier for me.
