yes you need rim tape, and yes you can re-use rim tape or just a few wraps of electrical tape will do.

electrical tape is about $0.90 at safeway.

Yeah, but spend the extra 4 bucks and get proper tape. Electriacal tape does stretch and break down with time.

That'll add VALUABLE SECONDS to your times!

It'll add a lot more than seconds when you flat because one of the holes has ripped open your tube!

and as it heats up it streches!

a mate thought be would save some weight and us insulating (electrical) tape on his XC bike but after a bit the V brakes had heated up the rim and the tube exploded! the PM brought about the conclusion that the insulting tape had stretched and caused the tube to touch the spoke head POP!

be careful.

Plus cloth rim tape is nice... very tough too. I use electrical tape when I'm doing it on the cheap, but still go 4-5 layers or so. But good cloth tape will last a lifetime, or something.

Ok... that has to be one of the few parts of your bike where it REALLY doesn't matter. Tube exploding, whatever - put a couple of layers on.

Bleh, do it and do it right, use cloth. On mtb it's not as crucial, but when you're dealing with high pressures, it does matter.

And only use Schwartzkopf hairspray for your non-lockon grips...ahahahahaha

Well I work in 2 shops and have a kitted out workshop at home, no need for me to cut corners, plus it doesn't always pay off.

At least with decent rimtape, you can remove and reapply it a few times without a worry of it being compromised. As I said, the pressure factor isn't as crucial with MTB's, I've just tried to develop some good habits.

This is so bad that I can't even think of an analogy to describe how lame it is.... seriously... rim tape!

Meh. Bad habits...
If you've got the right stuff on hand, why not use it?

Some of the better stuff, I forgot to mention, is the Michelin plastic tape, hard to get on, but bloody hell it's tough stuff, never blow out.

And yeh, it's lame, but it's what I get paid for.

This, from the man that would argue endlessly about the undetectable benefits of various suspension designs.....

Carbon would probably be heavier than cloth or electrical tape tho anyway, why bother?

in the event of not having either electrical tape, or rim tape. a single round of gaff will do the job for a while.
but replace as soon as you can with a decent rim tape. will only cost a few bucks, and is worth the money.
