They are awsome!
No idea how you would learn to do it, but they must be rc cars designed for it.
You could probably find an internet site that sells them.
heh got to love the chevy belair drifting it up

me and my mates did the same sort of thing with out petrol rc cars. we used pvc pipe to go over the rear wheels. it went crazy it was hard to control but once you got the hang of it was soooo fun :D

Yes the tyres are PVC or ABS plastic. Same consistency as plumbing fittings :)

Tyres is covered above, but the cars themselves are generally reasonably stock. That doesn't make them cheap, though.
I have tried this, and it is pretty dang hard. (Yes I have moved well beyond the difficulties associated with controlling a normal RC car :p )
Keep in mind most of those dudes would probably have been racing RC before moving onto the above craziness. Pretty cool, and a lot of skill.
I have a video somewhere of a nitro car going absolutely crazy - I will try to dig it up. The driver is so talented it's silly.

That was a cool vid :)
Ive got an article on RC drifting from an old hot4's mag i can post up if anyone wants it.
try using a thick plastic tape over an old set of rc rims, cover them in some oil, and go nuts. ahhh... when i was young....
even with a basic 4wheel drive electic road rc car, it'll go sideways heaps easy and was good fun.
thats mad
i managed to get the hang of it by first changing the tyres to smoother ones. then its the same basic principles as all drifting (mtb powerslides included :p ) turn slightly to the opposite way to where you want to turn and then turn real sharply to the other side.
the difficulty is keeping it going;)

One of my mates does it with a nitro powered car, all he did was get a model of his choosing then upped the engine size from somthing heavier, and you had the extra powered needed then practiced a whole bunch!

they spend so much money on those cars! one of my mates spend 20 grand on his. he kept blowing the engines from running to much nitro. he didnt care though he builds real drift cars for a living

he must have been geting riped off as even the very best rc cars do'nt cost anywhere near that much. he also must have no idea as a good rc engine will cop a fair wack of nitro before they blow up or maybe he was runing it to lean?

I've done the same thing with my nitro 1/8th buggy.
Made it rear wheel drive and locked the rear diff and ran bald tyres.
It was crazy. So much fun though.

I have a cheapy nitro car and smooth bitumen and a wet day are the way to go. Very difficult and nitro cars are frigging quick. Get it wrong and it gets expensive quick. I'm keeping an eye out for a painted car park or warehouse. That would be WAY too much fun and I would stop blowing diffs. :o

way better off just getting a tnx and doing massive jumps with it. way more fun. road rc cars are boring as shit after about an hour or two. even if they are fully sick drift ones haha.
but if your keen on them check out a company called Yokomo. they make the most beautiful shells as well.

if your blowing diffs get steel ones. they do make them for most gas cars and i doubt you will blow them up

Yokomo replacement parts are extremely annoying to get hold of BTW, if your looking for a budget, reliable, proven drifter you can't go past the Tamiya TT-01 chassis, just slap on some PVC/ABS or specific dirfting tyres, lock the diff and your set for some sweet drifting.

yeah they are a very similar chassis design and you can get so much after market shit for those tt-01's. its crazy. but i mean buy a stock one, put a decent speed controller in, 3600 battery pack and a 20t motor and the car goes pretty sweet.
