Has one of the worst safety records in SE asia. I'd avoid it if you can! Might only the small planes though.

You have scared me now 234 people dead.
Oh well it was back in 1997:p
Garuda Air is the only option seeing Qantas no longer flies to bali.
Does anyone have information about the comfort of the flight (fireballs into mountains don't count:p )

The air con is pretty crude - when it gets too cold they just set an engine on fire ;)

I've flown Garuda and survived..................one of the lucky ones. Constantly looking out the window to see if engine was still attached to wing.

I've been on Garuda a couple of times. One time we were sitting on the tarmac about to taxi out to the runway, when all the internal lights went off (power died somehow). So we sat there for about 10 minutes until they got it going again, then we got cracking. Fortunately nothing else went wrong.

PINT of Stella, mate!

Just stepped off another enthralling qantas trip  . I'm beginning to wonder if Garuda could be any worse. Frikking in-flight entertainment was screwing up for the whole flight (Sydney - Johannesburg) and with the exception of Ice Age 2 the movies that were available were pretty woeful!

I can't remember if Garuda are part of the Star Alliance but if they are they shouldn't be too bad these days...

not had much fun with garuda....they served food that I honestly thought was a green wetex. the only reason i thought they meant to serve it was because it was on everyone elses plates as well.

then there was the aborted take off, careering down the run way with reverse thrust on full and plam trees getting closer...I could do without repeating that experience.

Though i do love their lack of P.R. they actually told us what was wrong, some silly bugger forgot to shut one of the engine hatches. so we sat for 30min while the engines cooled down enough for another attempt.

I flew with them when I went to Bali back in 1998.

No problems from what I remember.

It's actually safer flying than crossing the road, so don't let it bother you to any real extent.

I'm an aircraft engineer by trade and can tell you that all airlines have incidents even QANTAS. I've flown on a lot of Airlines and the only one I wouldn't fly on is Air China (http://ships.bouwman.com/Planes/Bad-Jet-Engine.html).

I've flown Garuda a couple of times from Aus to Japan via Bali and while it's not fancy it's one of the cheapest carriers and they get the job done. You get what you pay for with them. Hell, I've flown QANTAS from Japan to Aus, paid nearly $3000 each for economy and the service was absolute crap. The flight stewards were curt and abrupt, the food was highly ordinary, and the inflight enterainment system was from back in the 70s. Certainly not up to their PR claims. Personally I will never fly QANTAS again.

Qantas international hosties are always surly, but it's great to hear an Australian accent again after a long stint O/S!

Unfortunately most of them still have the public sector mentality. :( Can't totally blame them, airlines are not the best business to be involve nowdays.

Well I just got back from my return flight.
The flight to bali was Ok, the lumber support was quite annoying so I put a pillow behind my bike (edit: back. behind my back lol) but then they had no other pillows left for me to use as a pillow to sleep.

The flight back was another story, it was a late flight via melbourne to sydney.
My entertainment system did not work.
And the flight was quite rough.

Ben_9 you are right dont eat the nuts, worst things i have ever had.
Anyone going to bali stay at the Hilton in Nusa Dua it is fantastic.

Having personal experience servicing Garuda aircraft, I can say that they are definitely not a top tier airline, but they are definitely not the worst either.

There do seem to be some ongoing minor maintenance quirks with most of their planes, and they hardly ever leave on time, but they are a good solid airline nonetheless.
