hey everyone!

i run northnoise up here and do tours for bands and stuff (done parkway, wings and now doing promqueen, provoke, and heaps of others) and im sick of paying 800 bucks a show for a PA and figured i should just buy my own and just take out 500 a show for it and it will pay itself back pretty quick (doing 2 shows a month). so yeah. i got 5 grand to work with. and a pretty big room as well. anyway got any suggestions or want to do up a quote for me or give me some advice? theres gurus on everything in here so im sure there will be a sound tech or two!

EDIT : new title and new cause. if anyone wants to hook me up with a quote from somewhere online that would rule.

Gday Bazza,

I work for a commercial sound company in Perth, we sell mainly PA systems for big buildings and such, but part of our range includes high power stereo gear for pubs, clubs etc. We've even had our 1KW amps installed in greater union cinemas in Victoria.

Anyway, we sell alot of gear that doesnt have a big name for itself, but is pretty decent quality at a super price.

If your after amps check out:

Speakers:

I can testify to the quality of some of our Biema speakers, we have pro sound guys come in for demo's and theyre gobsmacked at the sound for the price.

Since your in queensland its a bit difficult to come into one of our stores for a demo, but id highly suggest ringing our QLD PA dealer, Delsound on (07) 3397 8155. They can get anything in our range for you, plus no doubt suggest some other options.

Good luck!

It'll always be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand rig that someone has built up, but you'll obviously have to be assured that it's ok and you'll probably have to go to Brisso. Have a look on ebay or trading post etc and see if there are similar rigs to the one you've been using and if you will get one the same size with your budget. Otherwise, I'd just gradually build up your own - start with the desk and go from there. Obviously you'll still be paying for the rest of the rig, but at least you'll have the gear you wanted. I left the industry 2 years ago, so my info may be a little dated, but I've heard you can get some really good value for money these days, and there are some Australian companies that make really high quality gear at very competitive prices. Good luck!

my only real advice would be to make sure you get some decent limiters and protection for your kit. just to make sure you don't blow the gear or yourself up if an in-experienced band member plus the worng thing in to the wrong place or tries to turn the vol. up too much one night etc etc.

second hand is a good idea, assuming you know what you're talking about. if you can find ex-rental gear i'd highly recommend that, as it's always in great nick and comes from a place where they can offer some assistance if yoy have troubles down the road.

as an example of what you could get on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Full-Band-PA-with-weather-proof-enclosed-trailer_W0QQitemZ140005422883QQihZ004QQcategoryZ32 78QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
unfortunately it's about 3x more expensive than what you want to buy (plus, i doubt you wanted a trailer), but i'm guessing that's your target when it comes to the gear.

just one more thing, when you say you're renting gear @ $800 a night, do you at least get some discount for regular use-age?

edited and changed around. show me what set up you could get for 5 grand. basically want a set up that we can expand from but will also be able to do smaller gigs as is.

Off topic - when I was buying the sub woofer for my home theatre system, next to the sub I bought was a 1kw version. I came SO CLOSE to buying it.

I am glad I didn't, it would have been ridiculous. But think of it, 1kw sub-woofer at home.:p
