THE YETI

Im riding an 05 demo 8 pro. This came stck with fox40's but the previous owner swapped these for 888RC2X's before I bought the bike as he wanted the 40's. Im now lookin to get another set of 40's for this bike.

BUT, after lookin here on farkin im starting to wonder if the Fox 40's are worth the few extra $$$ to upgrade. Why are the 05 Fox 40RC2 going for basically the same price as the 06 888RC2X, when the 40's are approx $1400 more retail.

Anyone have opinions on whether this upgrade is worth the extra dosh?? Or should I stick with the 888's and spend the money elsewhere??

I have a Demo9 DH, so this reply is kind of relevant...
I run either fork on mine (its a long story).
IMHO there is one thing that will decide what you do...
Will you be racing?
If you will be then 40's are the go.They are lighter and work better under race conditions.
If not, and you only use it for a bit of everything then the 888RC2X is the fork, as it does 'everything' really well.
Some people (Not all) have had problems with the staunctions on 40's creaping up the crowns, especially if you stick to the torque rating that Fox reccommend on their bolts

Over all I'd stick with the 888's, thats what I run usually, the 40's sit in the shed

the 40's are an awesome fork easy to set up and are great in race conditions but have a problem in snapping which i found out yesterday.

40's suck, they crack, there cartriges blow..

there good, but not for long..

888's are alot better fork, stronger, feel better but they weigh more...

but more weight has more gravational effect hence you go down the hill faster:)

I agree with Custard except the total opposite.

Love my 40's.

Really?

I'm pretty sure that the first generation 888 lowers cracked just as often as the first generation 40 lowers, and since then both have altered their castings to be less prone to cracking. 888s are also a fair bit heavier and until the recent modles they have a stupidly high ride height- the fox is light and sits low. I've also seen more blown Marzocchis than Foxes too, so i disagree with your synopsis. Clearly 888s both suck and blow.

ahh, this is easy....

All forks suck and blow, so just by the forks that feel best before they suck or blow:rolleyes:

custard is on the money

For the extra $$ you pay for 40's, its not worth it, and from previous owners feedback, they would rather their Boxxer wc's/888rc2x's over them anyday.

And anyway, only like full uber fast rides crack 40's\888's (or huckers), so just go with the one you think feels/performs better.

seeing as though you bought the demo 8 off me, i still believe that bike was better with the 40's, buy Matt Vincents 40's, they are fine if you want an excellent fork at a ridiculously cheap price, right now i am actually running 888 rc's and they are pretty good, each to there own, the bike looked better with the 40's at first cos not many people had them, now everyone has em, stick with the white rc2x, not to many have em
confused, so am I!!!

Fox 40's would have to be the plushest forks I've ever ridden. If you dont mind replacing them every 12 months, get a set.

Everyone says 888's are great but they're too heavy. A downhill fork has to cop a pounding. You make 'em light ....you sacrifice strength. Wazza, post a picture of your fucked 40's from the State Champs.

Fox...beef up ya forks...fuck the weight, we'll live with it, so we can have the plushness.
Untill then, 888's are the shit...;)

hey gasman you have a black 05 intense m3 bought from stu french?
when it had 888RC2X in white it was the best bike ever!
why did you change?
(if you have this bike...)
i personally dont like 40's because of the lack of full oil bath
this means that after a while they turn to shit
and they just feel and look 'plasticy'
888's are the bargain of the century atm, just because 40's are a rip off people think they are actually better, well they arent

Thanks once again for your concern re; MY BIKE, i am veerrryy sorry that you have been upset at the fact i changed Stu's old bike that became mine, if you liked it so much, you should have bought it. Only problem was the rear shock was stuffed when i got it, quick trip to Manitou and all was well!!!
fyi, i sold the bike and am currently using 888's, maybe you can feel better now!!!
Fox 40's are an excellent fork (in my opinion) 888's are also an excellent fork (in my opinion) having now used both a fair bit, I still prefer the 40's, is that OK with you???
So for the benefit of THE YETI, you should stick to the 888's just to avoid upsetting TOM HELLY!!!
ciao

haha sorry gasman
didnt mean to fire you up or anything
but yes if id had the money stu's bike would have become mine

in truth 40's arent totally bad i just like bagging them

i herd that the 05' 40's were weak in the bridge and could snap easily,i know a person that has gone through 2 of them(no pix,and has been known to be a hard rider). the 06' range is solid as,but for all round use,i would just go for 888's,as i know they're reliable and trust worthy were im not sure about 05 40's,but then look at say kyle strait compared to wade simmons, one has 40's and the other has marzo's and both dominate. come down to what you are willing to pay,and if you trust it.

guys this decision is easy! 06/07 boxxer world cups, a wicked race fork, light and very adjustable and you get them for a bargain at the bike shed mortdale- they feel like nothing else! i ride them and always will!

i have had this internal debate for a long long time,
in the end i decided on the boxxer teams.

40's are light, but true they have had many teething problems. plastic looks but light. not much oil bath
888s are heavier but need to be serviced less. so think of it as a little heavier insurance.
the 06 WC's are light, work great and are all over the race scene. but need a servicing and maintenance.

looking at all three the teams carry most of the good things of each fork with the least of the worries.
strong enough, cheap enough, dont weigh like a brick attached to a house and work with little worries.
often overlooked but they are proven hard workers

just my opinion but hope it helps

ask red_dog what he thinks of my boxxers;)

why did you choose either 888 or 40 ? why didn't you consider boxxers or travis's as well in the first place ?

Id go the 888's for sure, the 40's are a good RACE fork but besides that they wont stack up to the 888's.

Also if its reliability your after then stay well away from the 40's unless you want to be taking forks off every ride for some type of repair lol

how about some ether?

i rode 888's for all of last year and they were great i never had a problem,i've spent a fair bit of time on 40's and dont reacon they weigh up...but now i have a 203 air sprung travis(word) and it is hands down the best fork i have ever ridden,i had to use a 06 world cup boxxer today and i was impressed but they didnt come close to my traivs
