I know this may have come up before but how many downhill riders out there wear motorbike fullfaces? i ride dirtbikes aswell as downhill and dont see the point in buying another helmet. who cares if it is a bit heavier, when you are screaming down a track at warp factor ten you wont be worrying about the weight of your helmet.
why mtb? do they give more protection?

Mate, should be sweet.

I used a heavy ass Arai motorbike helmet for ourimbah when I didnt do DH much and just borrowed off a mate. Then I used a fox moto fullface, which was a bit slimmer, still heavy, but you couldnt tell the diffrence between a MTB one or moto. So go for it

I know plenty of guys that use moto helmets instead of mtb helmets, some because their head is too big or they just decided to get a moto helmet.

the only advantage i see of using a mtb helmet is that it's lighter and has ventilation.

i ride in a moto fullface but thats because i can't be stuffed to fork out $300 for a mtb fullface just to use it once a month at oxford falls. i also don't find the mtb ones as comfortable. i think they don't have enough padding in them.

but the main thing about the mtb ones is the ventilation, really helps when your doing some all day trails. and the top end mtb helmets are actually noticably lighter.

How about body armour? I come from a dirtbike background and have heaps of gear which I would potentially like to use on the downhill bike(when I get it:mad: ) Does anyone where dirtbike armour and knee pads? Is there even any difference?

Depends what you mean by dirtbike armour. A moto roost guard might be ok (better than a t-shirt) but a Dainese suit is a lot better.

My moto helmet is only 300 grams heaver than my DH lid which you wouldnt think would be noticeable, but is does make a difference especially down a long track and on a hot day. But if you are just starting it wont really matter especially in winter anyway. If the moto lid works for you their is no need to buy two helmets.

As I understand it Dh helmets work better at absorbing the force of smaller impacts generously found in downhill, than a motorbike lid, so the MTB lid (in theory anyway) is safer for MTBin and the motorbike helmet safer for motorbikin. I may be wrong though?

the major difference between moto and dh full face helmets
is that a moto helemet is designed for bigger crashes which means if you have a small spill it is less likely to absorb as much energy whereas a dh specific helmet would absorb more

You know what they say..."prepare for the crash, not the ride." There are more and more riders using moto (DOT approved) helmets for DH and BMX.

Not that we need to be reminded this way, but a DOT approved moto helmet is what saved Johnny Waddell's life 3 years ago at Mount Saint Anne.

To be honest, some of the newer moto helmets aren't too much heavier than a bicycle full-face helmet. They are, however, a little bit higher on the price scale, but your head is worth the extra money.

Check out some of the helmets from Troy Lee, Simpson, Thor, and Fly. Fly and Simpson are actually not that much more than a good bicycle helmet and aren't that heavy.

I use motocross helmets, they offer more protection for the back of your head and the shell is just harder!

Carbon Fibre motox helmets are lighter and better then mtb helmets!

I've just brought a Fullface MTB helmet, after several months of using my moto fullface. I can notice a little difference in the weight and a big difference in the ventalation. My moto helmet has saved me on some fairly bad crashes, and in the end of the day, if you fell comfortable riding with the little extra weight, then there is no reason why you need another helmet just for MTB.

Im kinda due for a new lid, my carbon Troy Lees got a bit of a crack in the back of it.
Im thinking of getting a moto helmet for the extra safety.
I reckon Il get a Troy Lee moto lid coz they dont look as bulky as some others.

I've always used moto helmets. They give far superior protection. They are not as flexy either. I don't notice the weight, but thats all I've ever used, so I can't really compare.
