View Full Version : When Council's make concrete jumps.

I was driving through the back streets of Melbourne the other day, when I came across something which astounded me. At first I thought it was a skate part of sorts, but then I started to have a closer look.
It was a council built "BMX Park". Now, I am the first to congratulate the City of Boroondara for their fine effort and enthusiasm to create something for the kids, but it would have been great if they had had some input from riders.
If you look closely, the jumps that they have built are made out of CONCRETE! (I think someone forgot to tell them that it is called "Dirt Jumping") I am sure that someone thought that by making them out of concrete, it would stop them from eroding, and prevent little bastards from modifying them, but that setup looks outright dangerous.
Also, if you have a look at the tabletops, they all have lips on them like skate quarter pipes which means if you did try to jump them, the likely hood of poleaxing yourself is quite high.
Anyone keen to come concrete jumping??? :-P
Cheers
Al

so the 13ft metal half pipe where ever it is in melbourne is safe?, slippery high, vert, or concrete skateparks which usually have vert lips, unless you havent noticed there alot more dangerous than a few concrete table tops, let alone all those sharp edges to gouge out eyes with.

for vert stuff yes. certainly a lot safer than building it out of rough concrete or dirt....
slippery high, vert, or concrete skateparks which usually have vert lips
and are designed for vert work, and for that they are appropriate.
if you were building a set of dirt jumps for you and your friends to ride, would you build them out of dirt or solid concrete?
would you put a rollover dirt jump style lip on it, or a vert lip?
unless you havent noticed there alot more dangerous than a few concrete table tops, let alone all those sharp edges to gouge out eyes with.
true indeed, but in a council park designed for kids on bmx's, i think this is a really good example of not the best design for the job.

actually these jumps are very easy, when i first went there i though they were far too steep but once o i jumped them they are actually perfect. You get massive air over the 3rd too!

i might have to drag a bike down there and give it a bash. i would be keen to see someone manual the triples on the other side.

at least you wont have to get the shovel out to repair when riders come up short.
Be a great place to set up your truing stand to fix wheels after hard landings..

It wouldn't matter if they were concrete or dirt as long as they are designed well. I think concrete is a great alternative to dirt as the maintenance is minimized so council's don't have to spend tax payers money. This means its a good chance other councils may choose to build them.
Plus I have seen quite a lot of footage of these particular jumps and they look like they flow well.

I think you are way off the mark here, those jumps were built with input from riders. For council built bike jumps concrete is a much better option for controlling what happens, we all know that good dirt jumps need good dirt and a lot of maintenence to be kept running nicely. So long as the are nicely shaped and spaced it it the perfect way to do it. And those jumps are very, very nicely shaped. My only critisisim is that they start too small on the mainline and you have to chuck a few pedals in between tables. Have a ride there and you'll know whats up, those manual bumps are terrible tho'

Not really, its where i learnt to ride on a xc bike and the wheels where fine, its only when ur running tyres on like 40 psi and case hugely you have to get them trued, and these jumps are so so so nice to ride, there is heaps of flow and rhythem and you can boost so big off the last its not funny. they are the funnest jumps to ride though, in syaing that i think there should be a 4th and a 5th bigger or the same size as the 3rd, mmmm that would be awesome

yeh i reckon its a good idea little to no maintenance and it would be safe for every one.
this would be the best way to have it i think the only bad things that could happen would be graffiti but that looks good if its done right

Concrete jumps on to clay (or anything other soil that doesn't cause you to slide when it's on concrete) landing wouldn't be too bad. Or dirt landings with carpet on the soil. Concrete on concrete is fine but keep it to the skateparks.

That's a fair call. I just got my rig back from the shop, so as soon as I get a free day, I will head down there and actually have a bash at them. I did notice the size difference between the table tops, but as you say, just need to chuck a few extra pedals in between tabletops.

i reckon thsoe jumps look like fun but they could be very dangerous. face plant action could be scary:eek: it reminds me of the san remo extreme park. the lips are tar but landers are dirt. and also as bartman said, it is better than nothing. i would ride it if it was local:D

I thought dirtjumpers always wanted jumps that are like concrete...
:p
I think it's a great idea, far less maintenance.

But....you can't do the third one..
Niether can I...but :p
But as for stacking, it would depend how, if you slid down the tranny it doesn't hurt. I haven't stacked there before, but I have slid from the top of one of them and it didn't hurt at all.
Its concrete, but its got a glazed feel to it so you go faster, and so it doesn't hurt.

Ride them before bagging them out.
Its a good place, lots of hell rad sessions go down.
Some nuts locals too.
But yer when people crash they mess themselves up pretty bad and cases arent cool. Melbourne is starting to get more of them, new setup in melton is similar and other places have got them planned.
Check it out
ps.Nick if you see this, flip the 3rd hip ya pansy:p

is the concrete polished up and slippery or roughed up giving nice traction?
and stop worrying about casing you wallys there tiny tabletops.
as bartman said, better than nothing, wish councils would build stuff like that over here. logistically the council probably creamed itself over the idea of concrete jumps...
