I know there has been many a thread about cars etc. and plenty of "no v8s rah rah rah" has been talked about but has a list been released yet showing what cars learners cannot drive after July next year?

Apparently they are talking about power to weight ratios now...which is also bad news, does anyone no the numbers for that either?

I have looked through the qld transport website and didn't find the answers to my above questions so just wondering if anyone here could point me in the right direction?

PS. I am not worried about wether or not i can put a 4 inch tip on my omgzsweet vn commonwhore, because i do not have one lol, i respect what the government is doing and am wondering if my older car(read. pre 1970) will be drivable.

Without knowing any further details, I'd have a guess that if you're driving a pre 1970's car, the power to weight ratio would be ok (based on the fact that older cars are just plain heavy).

According to this submission from the RACQ (http://www.racq.com.au/images/documents/RACQ_Qld_Youth_Submission_Mar06.pdf), in Victoria, “A high powered vehicle is any vehicle with a power to weight ratio over 125 kw [kilowatts] per tonne, or with an engine capacity to weight ratio over 3.5 litres per tonne. This includes any make of car”.
So I would imagine it would be similar to that.

I believe they were talking about no turbo or V8 cars? So with those set aside you're left with pre 1970 six cylinder cars, and if we take the victorian power:weight ratio limitation as our example few, if any, would ever have exceeded 125kw/1000kg in standard form which is what matters.

Yeah, from the quick read of that submission that I quoted, I also noted that they're not particularly concerned with the power of the cars so much as the safety. ie. if they had all P platers driving around in a turbo'd Subaru Forrester they'd be much happier than if they were all driving around in a similar power/weight gemini.... I think. It kinda makes sense.

By the way, I mean no offence, but this is a definite misconception a lot of people have. Many (most) older equivalents to our modern cars are actually lighter, by way of the fact they have negligible safety and luxury equipment compared to modern vehicles.
For example, a lightweight small car today is generally in the 1100kg area; in the 70's it would have been more like 700-900kg. Today's Falcon is beyond 1800kg , the 1970 XY Falcon had a comparatively slim kerb weight of 1365kg. Cars weren't generally physically bigger either (with exceptions in the large car field) and todays BA falcon is longer and taller than the XY (though 5mm narrower!).

Fair call... I understand what you mean and, now that I think of it, I agree. I guess it's the same as people complaining about 4x4's being big beasts of cars where my '92 4Runner is actually shorter in length and width than a Camry sedan and less than 100kg's heavier than a current model Commodore or Falcon wagon.
