View Full Version : Starting a second job

I've had a job at a camera shop for about a year now earning $6.696 an hour/5.5 hours a week during a school term (holidays are different). Thing is, I figured I need more money so I got a job at Pizza Hut ($6.12 an hour:p). This is a maximum of 12 hours a week, so $73.45 (not deducting tax) and $36.80 (incl. tax) for the camera place.
Thing I want to know is, If the maximum hours a person under 16 can work a week is 12 hours, does this mean with the one employer or both of them?
Also, I've heard with starting a second job that you should get taxed alot more for the job in which you choose to get taxed more (obviously the photoplace). Will this apply to me, as I will be getting $5733 gross per annum for both jobs (under the tax free threshold). This is highly unlikely as I will probably quit the photoplace soon). The only thing that would put this in jeopardy is if I work bulk on the holidays (max. 38 hour week) which I highly doubt this will happen.

You reckon I could get away with working 15 hours (2 jobs) for a one week?

get a decent job with good pay(what your earning now is criminal) or commission and cash is the way to go.

Yeah, I was looking at putting an application in at Bunnings. Coles rung me for an interview (in Fresh produce).

The first job, which is your main source of income will fall under the tax exemption, but the second will not. HOWEVER, since your getting paid $6 an hour I am gonna guess your under 18, which means you don't have to worry about getting taxed, you'll get it all back at the end of the financial year (unless your planning on earning over about $8,000). So just think of it as a form of forced savings.

Hmm im under 16 and i get $11.69 an hour and work up to 25 hours a week. so i dont wat goes on up there but your bosses must be real bastards!!!
Forced Savings??
my workplace/tax man has fucked it right up... (no fault of my own - they have my Tax No. on file and i have been working there for well more than 1 financial year now..)
18% taken out every week, no matter the minimum or maximum i earn.
So -
i'm looking at about $900-$1000 back next year :)
You realise they don't just give you your money back at the end of the financial year... and that you have to submit a group certificate and get a tax adjustment.

everyone shuld be a dish pig!!!
Free food and drink well maybe not all places but i get them
And yeah I see what u mean about the whole pay thing i would prefer to keep my job rather than complain bout the pay and get fired, even though that might be a bit drastic.

when your at your age the money really sucks. i would recommend just getting by and having as much fun as you can rather than worrying about working your ass off. i worked as a dishie through most of yr 11 and half of yr 12 (friday and saturday nightsss) and it was the worst thing ever. i would of prefered being poor and going out and having fun than working at that age now that i look back at it hahah. take it easy man, hunt around for a well paying job that is going to deliver some really good work/hands on experience. go for the bunnings job in my opinion. see if you can work in the warehouse and see how much training you can scab out of the job (forklift tickets, first aid course and anything else you can get from them!).
