Junga airlifted to hospital after training crash - Cycling Australia Media Statement.
Queensland cyclist Renee Junger, 20, has been airlifted to Auckland City Hospital suffering suspected spinal injuries after a training accident ahead of competition at the MTB World Championships in Rotorua, New Zealand.
Junger, who is also a member of the BMX High Performance Program targetting the Beijing Olympic Games, crashed during training on the 4X course on Tuesday afternoon.
The Championships' medical team was quickly on the scene and she was initially taken to Rotorua Hospital. After extensive tests, including an MRI, CT scan and x-rays, doctors decided to transfer her by helicopter to Auckland City Hospital.
Her mother, Sallie Howie, was notified immediately after the accident and was on the first available flight to Auckland. She arrived shortly before midnight local time.
The full extent of Renee's injuries is not yet known. Doctors have confirmed however that she has suffered spinal trauma.
Renee, who won the silver medal at last year's BMX World Championships in France, was the 2005 Australian Female BMX Cyclist of the Year.
No further details will be released without permission from her family.

Looks to be true folks ..
click the link .
http://www.transcendmagazine.com/archives/000659.html
folks on the track said
"Many riders are here and have refused to race the 4x, citing the fact that the course is too dangerous. It's Steep, fast and narrow and as posted earlier today, has already claimed Wade Bootes (broken nose) as well as the Aussie women's BMX champ (broken back) "
man that sucks - i hope it's a pre-mature diagnosis and
she comes good ..
never a good thing to hear - Prayers for Renee Junger folks ..
G-man sadly outy

Its sad to hear, my best wishes go out to her.
It's a pity that the only time mtb gets media coverage is when its negative.
I wouldn't take that smh article for gospel either; "Four Cross is one of the disciplines of BMX racing, much like Snowboard Cross where four riders race on a downhill course with a series of turns and jumps."

That's truly awful, and my heart goes out to her and her family. I gather from that link that she has in fact severely damaged her spine in an inoperable way and it is doubtful that she will ever get feeling or mobility back. How big must that course be to have done that sort of harm to a rider in a crash?

Oh shit, really sorry to hear that.
There seems to have been a bit of dissent from a few riders regarding the layout of that track.

Not sure how that squares with the link posted by Mr Peabody. In it Renee's parents are reported to say this:
Update on Renee Junga - 11.30am Australian EST 23.08.06
Frankie Winter has just spoken with Sally Howie, Renee's mum, and she has permitted the release of the following
information:
Renee is in the Auckland City Hospital with 4 fractured vertebrae (2 in middle of spine and 2 lower), a broken Sternum, 2 broken ribs and perforated lungs. She currently has no feeling from the waist down. It is expected that she will remain in the hospital for 4 - 6 weeks and there may be a chance of an operation this coming Friday. Doctors are hoping the feeling will return very soon but are not sure of
the extent of the injuries. The 'up', is that Renee is very positive and co-operating with the Doctors. Her wrist was sprained but not broken. Elbows, shoulders and knees (the injuries she was carrying from previous crashes) are all okay.
How did this monster crash happen? There was a tricky Table top in the competition track that all the girls were having trouble jumping. Renee thought she would give it a go. She jumped alright but unfortunately over-cleared it resulting in a crash that broke her helmet in 2 knocked, her out cold
and caused major fractures. Earlier that day she had reported she was the first girl to complete the Wall Ride, a section of the track that has the rider at 90 degrees to the ground. She was shaken but elated that she made it. You know what they say, No guts, no glory.
My money is on Renee making a full recovery and being back on her bike very soon. She is a tough contender who can get through what most others cannot.
If you would like to send a get well message to Renee, you can email winterfamily@switch.com.au and your message will be forwarded immediately
