i went into a shop looking for a new pair of jeans,
they asks what sort i want, i said i just wanted normal jeans
and he said, all we've go is
tight
super tight
super super tight or
super super baggy
i get farkin annoyed when i cant find something as simple and
essential as a desent pair of jeans

my question is, where do you go to get normal jeans? the type you'd go riding in. (not really interested if you a fan of super tight jeans)

i live in Melbourne, but other people from other states may have some good places - so just say the name of the shop and where.

cheers evans

i dunno if you have rivers down there, but if you they sell regular jeans, the type you can't buy anywhere any more. if you can find one of their clearance stores you pick them up for 20 bucks, otherwise they're 50-70 at their normal stores.

*sigh*, I'm not really one to give clothing advice, but here goes.

If you are going to ride in them, you'll fall off eventually and trash them. Thus, it's not worth spending 300, 200, or even 100 on a pair.
Get a few pairs from an Op shop, or if you want to buy new, from Lowes.

Lowes sell two sorts- Black And Blue. The blue ones fade heaps in the wash. I don't know about the black ones. The material is thinner than on Levi's jeans. This makes them less durable, but more comfortable. The pockets arenn't very durable either.

I'd get a black pair if I were you.

Personally, I have two sets of jeans, ones for getting filthy, and another set which looks (only slightly) better. I get the filthy jeans from Lowes, and the others from David Jones. DJs has a nice range. If you want to shop at DJs, don't be stupid and pay lots for brand names like Armani. When I had a look, most of the Very Expensive jeans looked worse than the Expensive jeans.

IMO, Levi's have the best range of jeans, from normal styles right through to the trendy shite that EMOs and clubbers go for. I have about 6 different pairs and I like 'em all. They're expensivve, but they last for ages, so if you're not growing too much (up or out), then they're a good long term option and you can find 'em anywhere...

Another vote for Rivers. They also sell demin shorts which are strong, not ultra emo tight, look good and kick soo much ass.

As hard as it is to admit, I bought a pair of industrie jeans a couple of years ago that kick arse for riding in. Except 4X; I hooked one cuff around my cranks in a nationals 4X heat race and went from darting into 1st to dead last, lol...They have gotten even more trendwhoreish at industrie since then so you can't get anything like them now :(
I'm a big bloke and a little bit of a strange shape (fattish, 38" waist, I have huge thighs/quads) which means most jeans fit weird. Really baggy ones make me look like a hobbit, tight ones just aren't an option as they only pull halfway up my legs before they get stuck about 6" up from the knees, its a pain in the arse buying clothes. Same thing applied when I was thinner, only it was worse as smaller waist meant even smaller legs. When I rode/raced a lot in my mid-late teens I had to often buy at least a couple of sizes bigger in most pants to get large enough legs and then have the waist tailored narrower. I'm way out of tone now and my waist is bigger so thats compensated for it nowadays and its a bit easier.

Anyway enough of jeans and me....If you aren't a weird shape go with middle of the range levis or suchlike (not Kmart levis they're shite), don't bother with weird cuts and washes, go for something which isn't too low cut (or too high, but basically something which won't dart down and expose your arsecrack when you sit down on the seat) and allows good freedom of leg movement without being huge and baggy. Shouldn't be too much trouble finding something in their range.

edit: yeah jeans west, I've had some of their "Blend" in house range and they seem quite durable, nice cut and fit. Good value.

Reserve($4-10): Generally find these in opshops and such. Denim is pretty thin, so they make good summer shorts.

Levis: ($80-120) Strong, tough, Durable. Denim is thicker and they tend to be a bit warmer. Bit pricey though.

JayJays: Cheap (only $50), but the denim is super cheap and super shit. Cheap dressy jean tho.

Jeans West: (>80) Denim is thinner than toilet paper and tends to rip/wear really easy on the inside of the thigh. Not the best, but they dont look to bad.

JAG: (80-120) More expensive that levis, but if you get them on sale at myer (and lets face it, myer is always having sales), they go for $85-90. I find them slightly thinner than levis, but they're pretty suave none the les.

Ripcurl/billabong/etc (>100 - but they're shit)): Same expensive baggy or tight shit.

Mossimo, tsubi etc. (>150): They come ripped?

Just my impressions....

Really? Mine were shit... I slung a leg over a fence and ripped the inside of the thigh.

Levis. People seem to talk highly of Rivers as well, so maybe look at them? Cant go past some traditional riveted levis.

if you want jeans that fit ACTUALLY with your tackle, and feels like their NOT being disected by two horny elephants sometimes keep it simple and you've have to go to the lower end (non fashion no balled bullcrap), sadly i spent 6hrs lookin for this, and just plain black jeans, jeanswest/ed harry/surf shops/jesse's etc had nothing that wasnt a rebadged chick jean cutup...

yet to find those plain black jeans, but yea target and jay-jays, jj's jeans go through go and bad patches...last few pairs have been awesome, only one pair sucked the big one...although quicksilver had a nice pair...

I worked at jeans west for a bit and we had some pretty decent jeans. I think what your looking for is bootleg jeans or straight leg jeans, not super tight, not super baggy, just normal. Try lowes if you want some shit cheap ones for riding.

Same here - I never wear jeans or long pants even in the middle of winter. I just got sick of ripping my jeans on my chainring, and I hate that clammy feeling you get when you finish riding for a while and the sweat on your legs has nowhere to go.

No one will probably read this since its on like 15th page, but the best riding jeans you can buy are located in motorbike shops, they are made with kevlar and denom and have a waranty against tearing (1-2 years).

One prob with wearing jeans is that the hem can get caught on your big cain ring, or (if you have a single chain ring) can end up between the chain and chain ring, VERY frustrating! This can happen even if you have a bashie.
What I do is either wear shinnies, tuck into shoe/socks or (on rare occasions duct tape it to my leg! Looks dorky but you have a good reason.

Well, its not really applicable to riding but since you mentioned it... another good brand of designer jeans (getting away from the more than played out tsubi thing) is True Religion. Really good fit, insanely comfy different without being tight and bright, however probably not worth risking on the bike!

i know for a fact that Target jeans are the shit! I have one pair of the bluegrass jeans and a pair of Bluegrass denim shorts, both of which were less than 30 bucks. The jeans have held up great except for being ripped around the hem (mine are too long XD) but the shorts ripped up one thigh while riding...however i have sme great Etnies and Circa denim shorts for riding in, baggy comfortable and unbelievably strong.

I've been going through this for about a month.

Can't find anything to replace my rapidly fading and wearing levi's.
34 inch waist, big thighs.. not too baggy so i don't rip em on the chain ring. I'm considering buying some Chino's now or some work pants.
I bought some Lee jeans today, not my best purchase especially as my thighs will get bigger... **&#@$^&*@#!^)!

Emo jeans... someone needs to be hung, drawn and quartered for this.

Tell me this: I've tried to buy jeans again lately as I'm back into 36" pants for the first time in a while...

Why the f#ck can I not buy ANY sort of decent wash/patina in any size above 34"? Almost every brand goes 28-34" with interesting washes, finishes, texturing etc then all the jeans from 36" up are plain jane, no contrasts, toned down texturing, more subdued stitching etc. I just don't understand, what, do they think everyone with a waist bigger than 34" just wants boring, plain looking jeans?

Army surplus store for army cargos. Decent army cargos last forever, have loops for a belt if you so wish and come in a variety of shades/patterns for the fashion conscious ;). Alternatively K-Mart/Target/Big W for cargos with zip-off legs so you can have pants or shorts. Zip off the legs and stash them in your hydro pack when you or the weather warms up. Just remember to zip legs back on before you wash them;)

Personally, I cannot stand riding in long pants unless it is absolutely freezing.

OK,there is no such thing as normal jeans. When my sis took me shopping for my birthday we went jean shopping,it takes hours, bahahahaha.

To start off there is about 4 or 5 diffrent types, you have: waste,hipster,flare,boot-legged,tight and straight. I think that's all.

Then naturally you got to fit youself up with what fits you and what makes you feel comforable.

Now there is a bazillion-gillion different brands of jeans, all of them offer similar looks and textures.

I'll tell your right now,i probably have over 10 pairs of jeans now and not any one them looks like anothere pair, oh and they can cost anything from $15(if you're lucky enough) well up to in excess of $200.

Why the f#ck can I not buy ANY sort of decent wash/patina in any size above 34"?Because those of us over 34" obviously want to be restricted to getting stuff from Big & Tall. Damn, I just spilled more chicken fat on my mu-mu.

Don't know what your options are like in Tas, but larger Just Jeans shops have a couple of choices in 36/38" sizes, but you'll be lucky to find much anywhere else. When I go looking for jeans, I'm happy if I can find something that fits (36 or 38" waist depending on cut, cyclist legs) and doesn't look completely shite. Boot cut is the go, but there aren't many options there.

I really should try and get sent back to the US for work, because it is way easier to find stuff that fits over there, and jeans are cheap.

I'm with cvbass - I'm 6'5/100kg with no fat and I need 38 minimum and 40 preferred, and I also have trouble finding jeans that fit well (definitely not womanly hips either). Size 34 might be OK if I had no riding muscles whatsoever, but even if I didn't I would still be at least a 36.

It's even more annoying when the sizes are different between styles from the same brand

I always preferred Wrangler to Levis as they seemed to fit better & have a nicer material, they weren't as hard wearing though. I haven't seen them for sale in many shops over here though; http://www.wrangler.com.au/pdf/MensPants.pdf

And if you can get them from USA they are only US$16 (pants)/US$11 (shorts) a pair.

I tried Dickes shorts and pants on, they felt way too stiff. Do they soften up?

Dickies work pant/short as on torpedo7.com.au.

Jay Jays tomorrow methinks.

DH Maniac - where do you wear your jeans? Leg size shouldn't affect how they fit on your waist, unless your arse is getting bigger.

Yeh, lietch kind of said it slip. Jeans just tend to get fairly tight around the thighs, and are hard to get on with the smaller sizes. But not with the stretch jeans. They're ace. Plus, they never get as high as my waist.

Yeah I've had a couple of pairs of the pants, they're awesome work pants but the cut is all wrong for bike riding and they're pretty high waisted. The double knee ones are indestructible and yeah they loosen up a fair bit. So far I've got 2 and a half years out of the first pair, working in a bikeshop and the supermarket...

Listen to this guy. You can trust anyone that has to go shopping for clothing with their sister to the absolute word.

Why would i not go shopping with them.To start off,my sister payed for the gear, she was there to give an opinion, she knows what to look out for for me.

The only problem is you spend all day trying to find something that matches.

Ok, maybe not the waist, but the arse/map of tassie area above your sausage.

I'm assuming floody doesn't wear his under his arse like a retarded snowboarder/rollerblader.
