hello there, i am thinking of getting into bmx dirt jumping, i currently ride a ss hardtail and basically always dj on that, so my question is:
do you think the Specialized Fuse II is a good first BMX? i rode one today and it felt awesome. ( and if it matters a way around 45kg, im quite short)
here is a link so you can see the spec, the Specialized site is screwed so i got one from google:

i owned a fuse 3 for a while and loved it. the fuse two is also decent aswell. but if u want that little bit lighter with better brakes, wheels and cranks id go the extra i think $120 for the III

i would steer clear of the specialized bmx range, most bmx riders hate them and that says something i would personally pick a wethepeople bold.
the bold is a better bike from a better brand and its only $24 dollars more.
http://www.strictlybmx.com/categories.asp?cID=16 << has them for $524 and its the 2007 model.

yer but i am after something with a dark frame and white forks, it doesnt have to be top of the line as it will be my first proper bmx.
thanks for your help, keep it coming.

no offence but are you after a high quality bike or a bike that looks cool?
and the bold comes in black, looks sick and is high quality.
but whatever, melbourne rider.

Indeed it does; that (juvenile in particular) BMXers are trendwhores :P
If that wtp at $524 is good value, a Fuse III would be crazily good value for another $70 considering the frame, cranks, wheels and a heap of other parts on it are better!

I agree with what some people are saying, (this has happend to me) if you get the fuse II now and in a few months you land a 360 only to find that your rear wheel has snapped in two (not sayin it will) you'll wish you had spent the extra $120.

Kind of, but they dont ride particularly well anyway.

Come on, what $600 complete does!
The Bold is a heap of shit, naming rights are all the money buys. The frame is only chromoly downtube (so mostly hi ten), most of the parts are unbranded stuff and no better than the Fuse II parts (that includes wheels, crankset bars etc). Expanding on what I said earlier, going $70 more to the Fuse III gets you a full chromoly frame, sun rhyno lite XL/L7, rear cartridge bearing hub, truvativ luftalarm crankset, better brake...$70.
The Fuse II only has sun ZX-25s, but I'd be inclined to guess they're at least equal quality to the "36H Front Rim/48H Rear Rim" unbranded gear on the WTP, and
"(20.5")Cr-Mo main frame(DT,ST,TT,HT), threaded Euro BB, formed 40mm TT/DT, tig welded, weld-on rotor plate, internally releived HT, wrap gusset BB yoke, SS mounted brake bosses w/ SST DC amplifier, 6mm dropouts for 14mm axle"
sounds better than
"Chromoly Downtube Frame with 19.5" Toptube"
and the rest of the parts are roughly equivalent. For $120 less than the WTP....

i got a fuse two and i got mine $340 new. it was the best $ ive ever spent.. ive had heaps of bikes and this is the smoothest i have had. my last bike was a 2006 specailized p2 with juicy 7 and pikes . ive had the fuse for 2 months and it shreads over my mtb. i bought a new brake lever and i can stall at the skate park with one finger so the brakes are fine. mine weighs under 14kg with steel pegs so its pretty light.
i say get one they are so worth it..:D

hey mate, firstly dont worry about brand hoars , wethepeople bikes arent even that great except the top few frames like the miller lite and 4 seasons.
I ride a fuse 3 and they are a awesome bike, but the fuse 2 isnt that bad , however if i were you id wait for the new 2007 fuse bikes, i have them at my work and they shit all over the 2006 models, ie the fuse 1 for $399 has a full chromo frame and sealed euro bottom bracket with wicked cranks on it,some guys only hate specialized cuz they are a mass produced bike company, big deal at the end of the day cuz lil brands like wethepeople are the ones suffering from them, as there bikes are as good in the higher price brackets for alot less money. so get the new fuse 2 or 3!!!, and big deal if he has to get a new wheel, i have odessy wheels on my fuse and the whole thing only weighs 12.5 kgs with some real heavy parts like (s n m) slam bars.

As far as the BMX trendwhore thing, I see a lot of bias towards companies percieved as rider owned rather than big bike companies.
Makes sense to me, I'd rather give my money to someone who actually rides than a big company, and they're more likely to have figured out what I want in a bike.
But then fashion takes over and it becomes "uncool" to ride big company bikes, even when they catch up to riders needs and wants.
I'd say if the budget's tight, the fuse is a good buy. If you can stretch it out to around $700, you'll have a lot more options and a lot more bike in the end.
As for colours, come on, it's a bmx, the paint's gonna get trashed. Get a 7 buck can of spraypaint and make it any colour you want.

I haven't got wideranging enough BMX experience to know for sure, but given just how dialled the SXs, P bikes, stumpy hardtails, roadies etc are out of the box I find it hard to imagine they could fark up a BMX. Given how small most BMX companies are the average small company, high end BMX ride quality is probably more down to chance than R&D too...

my friend has an 05 fuse 2 and it feels alright but it could be better
another friend has an 06 fuse 3 and it is a whole lot lighter and cranks are way better and a whole lot smoother
another friend is getting an 07 fuse 3 for $600, it has a long brake cable instead of a giro which adds to the braking power and reduces the weight of the bike aswell, it also looks better than the 06 model, so if your after looks and specs, even though most bmxers dont like them, id say the 07 fuse 3
you can get them from Northside Cycles in Chatswood.

um.. i'd have to disagree. if you set up a gyro properly then they have equal braking power, and you save like 50grams between the two.

i had an old fuse 3, can't remember what year, it got stolen, i hated it.
it was a green one had mountain dew sponser stickters on it. the frame was great but everything kept breaking. that being said i believe it was mostly due to the bike shop and the fact that i am not a small guy. wouldn't mind it with better spec. but this was an older one, 03 i think

yeah i agree, gyros work well when set up, i have a 06 fuse 3 with a gyro and works better then most of my mates straight cable set ups , just no one relises how good chrome rims are with decent pads as well.
and as for weight hahah straight cable saves u stuff all.

I think were this is going is that the more you spend the better the bike, obviously. The better the parts stock, the cheaper everything will be in the long run, save for something nice and don't absolutly don't buy a bike that your going to be affraid of wrecking.
Lots of people spend loads of money on parts and then they they go soft because they're affraid of breaking their new precious parts.
better parts will last longer and will be cheaper than having to replace crappy parts over and over.

ITs simple... go to your local bike shops and check out all the different bmx's they have.... Once you've looked at all the different brands and models u will start to see a pattern in what u get for how much u pay. When you decide the amount you are willing to pay... then decide on which brand has its pros and cons in that area of price. Personally.. i believe u are better off spending around the 700 mark to get a bike that is going to last and not be in need of instant upgrading.. i know u say ur onli starting bmx.. but as soon as u get into it u will want to upgrade small things like brakes and eventually rims etc.. my mate ended up spending like an extra 1000 on a 500 dollar bmx... take that as a common example.
Eastern bikes make a nice one for around 750.. u should chek that out if u have the cash.
Im getting a sepcailized p.street on friday its like a 24inch bmx with forks and the cranks are freaking awesome so what do you guys think of them....?
i don't really care.
but as floody has said in detail, fuse 3 for $70 more is the best option.

i used to have an 05 specialized fuse 1 and i thought it was good. the fuse three is a much better bike than the fuse one but i am not sure about the fuse 2 because i have never ridden one. the fuse three feels smooth. i would spend a bit more, as the fuse 3 is a better bike and will last longer.
