cool bike mate, and well done with the photography!

looks like you've made a good choice with the short stem, only suggestion i'd make, that wont cost you a dollar, is grab a screwdriver and piss off the reflectors. might be able to get the pedal ones off too

have fun learning!

Stone67
27-08-2006, 06:31 AM
What kind of bike is that?
I hate those reflectors they puon pedals, I always rip mine off with a screw driver straight away. Everywhere I ride is littered with the rotten things.
Have heaps of fun on it Mitch

Cheers Dave

sweet bike mate,looks good.

might want to investigate your local LBS for some spacers to go under that shorter stem.

enjoy riding it, and learning.

My friend used to own a cell, I see them in AMB all the time, it wasnt a bad bike but he did eventualt break it.....great learners bike though.

A real positve is that with this bike to learn on youll get used to the DCs, me (and all my mates) got used to SCs on our first bikes and it took us like a month each to get good again when we upgraded.

Have fun,
Sam

P.S.
What are you doing posting this at 4AM?!?!?

I'll fess up, I dragged Mitch on here and showed him the Cell site plus he's seen my bike in the flesh and was well impressed. :)

My Cell has come a fair way...I should update my thread. :o

Mitch: use the search function if you're after something, they tend to get a bit grumpy around here if they have to repeat themselves. ;)

Grumpy?? Us?? Nooooo! :p

Best tip I can give to anyone joining a forum; hang back for a bit, have a read, check out the dominant culture and accomodate to this. But you don't sound like a 13 year old, I don't think you'll have any worries at all.

So, when are we going to see some pics of you two (lovers :p ) riding your new machines?

OK UPDATE:

Took the other stem back to dift, they couldnt fix it so.. i opted for a new other one.. payed a little more $$ and got a FSA stem and a FSA bar too (pictured below)

Ha, I did exactly the same the first night I got my Chase home. Over tightened the stem and stripped the guts out of it. Piece o' crap butter metal they used......don't buy Funn Serial Ripper stems!

For a beginners bike? just fine.

Incase you're confused: I ride the same bike (http://forums.farkin.net/showthread.php?t=53661) and love it to bits.

if you're planning to keep that set up, it might be worth while getting some spacers and still using the cap at the top of your head tube, it'll keep your forks in tighter and i reckon falling on it open would be pretty vicious...

that or cut it down so that the top cap thing fits in without out - but ian could tell you how much of a hassle it'd be to rectify if it was cut to the wrong length

I really like these sorts of threads, watching beginners starting off with bikes that they bought to start off with, and then do it up to a sick bike.

Just like your mates xmetals thread.

So you're getting a Kona...Stab?

Wrong, Kona stinky 03 model. May I add what a bloody great little frame they are. They feel like a hardtail take some massive hits! Just make sure the rubber stopper things on the forks are correctly in place. Mine weren't on my 888's and dinted my top tube :(.
Xmetals getting my forks, FRN-71E is getting Xmetals and I'm getting bikeman_baldriks. Oh don't we all love farkin!
Might I add the painting of the spring ;). Should look great. In fact I shall do the same on mine.

thanks dude... he fitted the new forks for me tonight.. and his new forks and wheel.. look hell hot.. cant wait till we both can hit the tracks with them.. but going to take me a bit getting use to a dualie after the hard tail.. sat on it after putting the wheels on it.. think i might need a stiffer spring.

You will find it wont take long at all considering its a stinky. I went from a mongoose thunderball to an 03 stinky frame and adapted to it right away. They have a hardtail'ish feel to them, apart from the pogo ‘ness :p. I want to see the spring painted like Ian said you guys would!

sheesh, what a transformation!!
so, can we have a spec list? :p
and are there any original parts from the cell?
gotta keep something off the original beast :)
maybe a top cap? or a valve cap? haha

Yer couple things are still original, brake's still running Shimano cable brakes and the levers is off the Cell, LOL rear brake Lever is off one of my first bikes back like 10 yr ago lol! if u look close its silver and the front brake lever is black, will upgrade them when i go to some hydro brakes, but they do me for now! Tires and rims are from the Cell, caskette is off the cell, and rear derauler is from the Cell. (everything will be upgraded over time!) Oh and next is to paint the rear spring YELLOW!!

 The stinky is out of action! after its first ride at killi, i have killed the rear derailleur but final gives me a reason to better something better so.. thinking of getting Saint gear. What u guys think what derailleur and shifter should i get?

The rear shocks bottom bolt was bent and not a good fit.. so i took it out last night but as i was it was bent a little more then i i thought and it snaped half way out.. so had to drill it out (NOT VERY FUN AT ALL) and now have totally stuffed the ally bushs, so need new ones of them and have got a better pin and bolt type pin in the bottom, just need to visit Drift and get some new bushs and she will be back on the tracks.!

Also it rides beautiful in the bush soaked up the bumps, just need to get out on it more so i can get a better feel of the bike so i can hit some of them better jumps and drop offs!

Also finally got rid of the crap tires that came on the Cell, Have a WTB Timberwolf 2.5 on the rear and a Kenda Nevgal 2.5 on the front and WHAT a differents does it make.. Grip's like s**t to a blanket, The Kenda is a second handy so have ordered another Timberwolf to replace it once its stuffed.

Hey mate, was just reading your thread.

How does the 800lb spring go. I dont know much about stinkys but 800lbs sounds way to high.

I am running 450lb spring on my M3 and Glory and its perfect. None of my friends run anything higher then 500lb springs.

I just did a search on stinky and spring and had a look at alot of different threads. No one is using a spring any higher the 500lb. Most are around 400-450lb.

800 is way high and would make the bike feel like a hardtail.

I am not having a go or anything just thinking that a bike like that will handle much better with a lower spring rate.

It is stiff but i am nearly 100Kgs so it works well for me.. as Xmetal he had a ride of it on the weekend he said it felt good.. it is stiff but thats the way i do like it.. i got the frame with a 600 and next time in the bush will thru it on to see the difference but ur i like it with the 800!

I weight 86kgs, and use a 450 spring. Yes i realise they are different frames but I still believe the 800lb is way over sprung.

Check this link out, its a spring calculator.

Xmetal was over last night was working on his bike, so i had a little play around with a 600 spring and we both agreed its WAY to soft for me.. i sit on it and it near bottomed out.. i just have to bounce on it and it would bottom out.. so im going to stick with the 800..

On a DH or FR bike you want between 28-33% sag. When you sit on the bike the normal way you ride it.

Dont forget that the compression circut will take care of the bottom out. If it bottoms out then wind abit more compression into it.

You need the shock to compres 28-33% to allow the rear wheel to stay in contact with the ground in rock gardens and stutter bumps. With an 800 spring at speed you would just bounce off the track.

Take a look at the spring rates of almost everyone here that rides a DH/FR bike. They are below 500.

Trust me. I run 450pound spring and am hitting stuff like this no problems at all. It never bottoms out. Its all about how you set the shock up.

Have you got a new derailleur yet?

If not you might want to look at getting a sram x.7 or x.9

EDIT*
If you have to get shimano for some reason look at the new Xt shaddow or Lx
