generally hydro brakes will be more powerfull, but thats not to say that mechanical brakes wont be powerfull eg.Avid BB5/7 feel good and powerfull. Hydros will generally be more expensive. I would stick with the mag - if it isnt feeling to good you might need to get it bled or get new pads.

Go with some hope minis if youve got the money or some avid juicy five a mate of mines got them and they work pretty nice

it isnt that they are not workin well.... but they tend to lock up and skid if you no wat i mean
i find a big difference btweeen hydro and cable
i have just had them recently bled and got a bit of TLC

Hydros=Better stopping power, but generaly more expensve
Mechs=Lower maintenance, and you can adjust them yourself without getting coverd in oil.

Also with mechs you can have a long ass cable to do barspins and tail whips, without worrying about rupturing the hose, also you know those stacks you have when the handlebars spin around like 5 times? With Hydros lots of things can go wron.

If I had to choose Id prob go Avid BB5/7 with enough dag to do barspins a tailwhips.

Is your bike/rim v-brake compatible? if so then that might be an option.

What size disc are you running? I had Mags on my last bike and loved em, yeh they locked up easily, but that was a good thing for lots of stuff, it just took a bit of time to get use to it and feather the brakes abit more.

V-brakes are definatly an option, easily adjusted, simple but the pad wear down quiker than disc brakes....unless your willing to spend a bit more on super long lasting ones, which, by the way, are still like half the price of disc pads .

One of the things i like about the disc brake ( i have the standard Hayes 9" on the STP1) is that it works the same in the wet as in the dry.

Braking hard with V's always freaked me out in the wet, so unpredictable.

What are hydraulic V's like? Do they offer the same kind of stopping power as mech. discs?

I've got a MX-2 on my 416 at the moment and i prefer for it over the hydro's i've used on the bike previously (Hayes Mag, Hayes Nine, Juicy 5). Whilst having a huge ass cable and zero maintianence whatsoever it's perfect. I had the juicy 5's on it originally cause they come stock but i needed them for my dh bike and they didn't really grab as well as i thought they would when i did bubakas, so i put my old MX-2 on with a 'genuine' hayes 6" rotor and bought some new hayes pads and when u got it tuned up the way you want it's awsome.

Hydraulic disk brakes are better in every condition except perhaps trials, where they lack the on/off power (though a couple newer brakes have gotten close to what you need for trials). They require much less maintenance than cable disk brakes, contrary to what has been said, have more power, more progressivity, and above V brakes, always break when you need it (IE mud and water). V brakes also eat up your rims so you need to have adapted rims.

If you always lock up with your mags, get smaller disks, learn to dose your breaking better, or get better tires. Getting less efficient brakes isnt the best thing to do, considering the mags are more than good brakes.

run some 6" XT's. Plenty of modulation for manuals etc and plenty of stopping power for DJ when u neeed to stop.

I wouldn't bother going out of your way to get a hydro. Cable is all you will need for dirt. don't need much power

i just got a hayse 9 8", compared to my old setup with cables they are like a dream, but to adjust and maintain they are harder and messier, but it has to be done less often. but i would definately go with hydro if your handy and can afford it

There's no way Juicy 5's don't grab as well as MX-2, Juicys are way better. And if MX2's did work better why wouldnt you put them on your downhill bike? wouldnt you want the better brakes doing downhill?

In my opinion hydros are a lot better. With some mechanical brakes i find that
they have to be constantly adjested. I've never had any trouble with my hydrolics but my friends have trouble with their mechanicals on and off all the time.

If you dont want to spend to much money buy second hand. I have a pretty much brand new one for sale http://forums.farkin.net/showthread.php?t=62456

I have run hays mx2 and avid juicy on my street rig, I found that the hays mx2 is grabbier but it’s harder to control the braking power so the wheel locks up easy, so its useless.

If you want to upgrade the brakes on your bike I would go hydraulic because they are better in almost every way. I would only stick to mechanical if I was a hack and broke stuff often like brake levers, lines etc.

all you need is a mechanical because in DJ's you dont want to stop riding when on jumps or else you'll stuff it. you dont need the extra power you need in downhill or 4x. hope ive helped
