So I've been growing my hair for ages, and I'm just waiting till it's long enough to make decent dreads. But it struck me, that helmets may not really work with dreads...

So for anyone that has had experience, what's the story? Will I have to buy a bigger helmet? Is it uncomfortable to have dreads with a helmet?

Cheers,

Doug

Won't the dreads do the job for you?

the good old dreeds, they are cool but wearing a helmets in hard cos the helmet moves around too much unless its really tight, and the dreeds are tied down somehow, the bemx style is the best way to go with dreeds because you cant ajust the size of the helmet except for the chin straps

yeah, what kinda helmet bud?
i used to have dreadies while i was in school, and as far as i can remeber they went ok under a xc lid, but they do make it sit up a bit higher. pretty sure you will need a bigger helmet if you have anything costrictive like a dirt lid or fullface, ive got normal hats from back then that are huge and they fitted good over the hair...
but yes as johnny said they do offer a bit of 'natural' protection... ALL THE FREAKING TIME...

Yeah, I wore dreads for a couple of years, there's no real issue getting them under a helmet but you'll need to buy the next size up if you go for big-old fat dreads, rather than skinny ones.

Problems;
1) Your helmet will smell like you shat in it.
2) Your dreads will collect helmet lint from the helmet lining and suck them down deep into their core, leading to festy dreads in the long run. No matter how often you wash them, all dreads will become festy on the inside in the long run anyway, this just helps it happen faster.
3) Dreads absorb arseloads of sweat, by the end of the ride your head could seriously weigh a good kilo more than when you started.
4) Dreads make you heaps hotter when riding, as you have a woven mat of human hair blocking off all your helmet vents.

Despite all that, I fucking loved mine like children and curse the fact that I have a job that requires a "respectable middle-class" appearance.

I was riding a 10inch high kids bike in the street once. Got stopped by the cops. I tried to explain that I wasnt wearing a helmet because you cant get a helmet to fit properly over dreadlocks. They nodded, siad "of course", and then slapped me with a fine anyway.

Aparrently my friend's mate took all the padding out of his full face and wore it like that... he must have had massive dreads

Yeah it works ok. When I had mine I bought the next size up x country lid for everyday day stuff and a skate lid without any padding for the rest. Just make sure you take the velcro tabs out from the inside of the skate lid...
