I am thinking of buying a 2004 model GT DH-I.

It comes with fox pro pedal rear shock, 888R forks, full XTR, MRP Guide, WTB rims and tyres and synchros bars and seat post. What do you guys reckon. Are these bikes any good?

It retails for about $6600. Should I buy it?

Gt's are sweet bikes, and it's specced realy well.
You cant go wrong with full xtr, the new 888R forks feel so damn nice, mrp, hayes are all sweet aswell.

No idea what syncros are like but, change the stem and bars.

i belive shmity once said:

"i-drives make me jizz repeatedly in my panyloons"

although this may not help

i cannot speak for durability, etc. but i am definitely a fan of the geometrically based anti-bob...
then again i have never ridden one so i cannot tell if you if it actually works or is better than an SPV shock so i may be pulling nuggets out for the proverbial prosterior...

It would go sick, awesome spec, proven design - my only gripe is the paint scheme :)

IMO GT have fallen behind in the last few years and the DH I drive look a bit Kmart plastered in all that graphics. IMO tho... And it seems to be lacking the biggest revalation in current F/s technology... 5th element or similar shock...

My god, that is one hell of a awful colour scheme isnt it. YUK!

MUNGUS

yeah they work fairly well but don't take big hits as well as a giant or something. the paint scheme this year is pretty bad as well but they aren't a bad bike.

Fox's Pro Pedal is there snap at 5th technology. Ive heard it works just aswell if not better .. and is less of a fiddle.

the nature of the i-drive suspension set up means it doesn't need to rely on a 5th to have a reasonably good peddling action, whilst still having a fully active rear end.

does the nature of the i-drive suspension acount for running your chain underneath the bottom roller of the MRP guide....? (chk photo) Not to mention it looks like its running some funky offcentre rear cassette technology and a seat post you are gunna have to cut the instant you buy it...That raises some questions about who is doing what over there at GT...

Going by reputation tho it should be a sweet ride...

$6600? And here I was thinking it went for $8000ish? Man, that's an alright price, I might think about one myself...

best parts out there... shitty colours though... it occured to me that i'd like to use one for the parts to build up a v10... mmm old school XTR cranks and mrp... SEX

I don't know about that? The I drive eliminates suspension backlash on the chain and vice versa but it still doesn't eliminate the big baddy of suspended bikes that is our friend Bob.. Pedal Bob. Sorry I didn't read the specs on the and see the pro pedal. Sounds like a bargain buy, Sansblast a brand new Gt and paint it Matt Black!! Sex 8)

Probably won't work very well with only one crank, like in the photo. You may need to purchase a second crank before you use it.

Well seing as i have ridden an dhi i can safely say that they pedal as well as any bike running a 5th. Along with awesome geometry they are a great buy.

However i too are a bit unsure about reliability issues.

If it rides anything like the '03 one (which it most likely will, if not better) then it should farkin RULE! i love them... they dont make a noise. smooth, silent, and plush... speed demon.

I have the 03 DHi and i love it, and far as i know the 04 frame is pretty much the same, but it looks as though they are trying to make it look a bir beefier with the 888 up front. IMO the DHi pedels better than ever other DH bike i have used, and if the are adding a Fox Pro Pedel rear shock it can only get better.

Ill email him.

But he doesnt respond to small times like me. :(

The bike's got a reputation of a ford Pinto
they ALL break. A mate cracked 2 rear triangles in 10 days.....
I heard other riders cracking theirs up to 4 times in one season. No Bull.

Fox Propedal is a band-aid on a wooden leg. They just changed the shims a bit to the latest fashion. That's it.

but apparently it rides like a bastard set on fire. up to you

Yeah, the i-Drive system allows for a moderate amount of chain extension that allows it to pedal DAMN well - as close to bobless as you will find without a bandaid shock.

I'm riding an 03 dhi race and have tried a 5th element shock in it. The only improvement was the tuneability but it did not make a huge difference to the suspension performance. DHI's pedal well over aneything regardless of the shock. You won't regret getting one.

i did hear that a lot of '02 and '03 rear triangles broke. supposedly fixed in preproduction for '04 tho.
also know that all broken rears were replaced by warranty, in many cases overnite, so not the problem it could be.

The 03 ones went for about $8900.. ouch.

Yeh, $9k was a bit steep, but the upgrade for 04 with a price drop as well is more than welcome!

horsey
28-11-2003, 01:28 PM
Yeah the retail price for 2004 is $6599. Massive price drop, still an awesome bike! Don't know about the durability of the XTR stuff on a DH bike though.

Regarding the rear triangles the old US made dhi frames did have probs the 02 GT bikesdid not come to OZ and the 03 bikes are greatly improved and I have not heard any bad reports on them breaking.

No idea what syncros are like but, change the stem and bars.

Synchros make some of the best components I've ever seen on a MTB. I can't speak of their new gear (I actually thought they'd shut down) but if it's anything like their old cranks and stems it should be very sweet gear.

The I-drive system works so well with a standard fox shock that i dont think it really needs the 5th in it. I have been riding a 222 which is supposed to be a real light and fast pedalling bike but the dhi is so much faster. when u pedal it feels like a hardtail not like any other downhill bike. They are cheap but they are not a super active ride tho unless u run a super soft set up. :D

they arent the strongest either.... I cracked front and back once each

nice mate...if it was my bike, I would definitely get the 7" conversion for the 888 to lower the front end!

With the decals, the paintjob doesn't look that bad! Man I can't wait to see what proto DH bike Brian is going to be riding this year...I hope the I-Drive 2 technology makes it on the DH bike.

I've had my DHi for over a year and the thing farkin rocks, no need for fancy valving and spv chicanery, It hammers. As for durability, I weigh 100kg and havent had a drama, only a heavier spring needed. I just got some 04 World Cup Boxxers for her too. Lovin it. Pissed at GT for dropping the price so far after I payed a shitload for mine.

Well they have been delayed again, now the GT DHi's are expected to be in mid March. Only upside to this (perhaps) is that cause GT have had so much time waiting for the chainguide to be made, the R&D dudes had time to redesign the back end of the bike. It is supposed to be much beefier than last years model and is essentially the 2005 model. Lets hope these bikes are worth the wait.
