Hey everyone,
I was watching Earthed 3 the other day and there was someone who couldnt like mono when he was going backwards because he must of had a special hub or something if anyone knows what these are could they please let me know.
If you don't understand what i mean i'll explain more precisely.
its like when you pedal forwards you go forwards but when you pedal backwards you go backwards as well there for backwards monoing.

when you pedal backwards you go backwards
that sounds more like a fixie, but i cant see why anyone would want one for anything other than old school fun...
there for backwards monoing.
how? wouldnt a backwards mono be a rolling endo?

Actually I think he means fixed gears but that guy in earthed 3,Chris Akrigg isn,t running fixed gears he pushes off a wall & back pedals while monoing backwards.
Hope this helps,

Would that work if you made your bike a left side drive but didnt get a left side drive hub, just out it on back to front?

I watched that movie today, if you're talkin about the freestyle trials rider Chris Akrigg or whatever, he is rolling backwards down a hill, but keeping the front wheel off the ground just by applying resistance to the pedals, while still pedalling backwards. Could do it on any conventional geared bike, just need a lot of skill. :D

um,i say he his just using his skill and momentum to do it,ive tried it and manage to move back for a bit(about / / that long hehe) but thats what i think.

What happens if you have a freecoaster or whatever hub that allows you to pedal backawards and..... You are just riding along normally and you decide to pedal backwards? would this lock up the rear wheel?

How about use of brakes?

nup, freecoasters (which allow you to NOT pedal when riding backwards) work by pushing out the pawls using the force (ill put acceleration here for those of you who know force is the wrong word) generated by pedalling forwards, but because other than that they work like normal pawls for coasting and pedalling backwards it just spins like in a convemtional hub.

a bit off topic and im not sure if it's been mentioned or not, but isnt there a hub or something that aron chase uses, so when his rolling backwards he doesnt have to pedal backwards?

If you can go backwards when you pedal backward doesn't that means the pedals spin with the hub like a lock wheel?

read up one post... its called a freecoaster
to the original poster: the only one i can think of that allows you to pedal both forwards and backwards is a fixed wheel hub... but then you cant coast (ie always pedalling)

they are called reverse manualls...
and yes very hard!!!!!!!!
there are lots of dudes that can do them mostly are on freecoasters but a few just have a standard casset hub...
karl poynter is the best at reverse manualls!!!!!!!!!!!

and to add, the aaron chase thing is a SIC neutral gear, its a spacer that you replace some of the rings on your cassette.

yeah a_bomber06 just said it before its called a freecoaster
too clean everything up.
chris akrigg pedals backwards whilst hes monoing.
freecoasting hubs are like back pedal brake hubs, but wit the brake mechanism removed, they work with a clutch rather than a pawl system.
so when you not pedaling there is no contact between the hub body or cassette so you can ride backwards with out pedalling. whereas with a pawl system, the pawls click over and are always engaged.
odyssey freecoasters are a cunt. howzit dale, lol you need to have a certain position with your cranks to make sure its disengaged.
nakai make a pretty cool one that when you want to disengage the hub u just pedal back a bit and it locks so u know its disengaged.
you can also remove the 2 smallest cogs in your cassette and replkace them with spacers so when you shift down it rolls on the spacers, and shifting back up aint to much trouble, but u cant pedal out whilst on the fakie gear or u own your knee on the stem.

the odyssey one isnt to bad... you need to get use to them just like any new thing you buy.
you need to be super smooth and keep the same amount of pressure on both pedals so it doesnt engage...
the Nankai is the bomb super smoooth and works like crazy!!!!
all coasters are good you just need to understand how they work and ajust them or modify them to suit your style of riding...
In the odyssey one all you have to do is bend the springs in order to change the slack..
(slack being how much you pedal before the hub engages)
The Nankai one has a small washer inside the clutch so the thinner the washer the more slack you have...
Basically the more slack you run the less chance you have of your hub engaging when doing high speed fakies..
hope this helps.

well the new KHE street freecoaster owns.
Sealed bearings unlike the nankai, comes already in 14mm so you don't have to buy new studs
not to mention they are built for abuse
