Hi,

imagine you love MTB XC riding (and that is probably the reason, why you are reading this :) ) and you had the unique opportunity to move to either the Melbourne or the Sydney area.

Which would you choose and why?

Cheers, Kruemel

what if you already live in one of the options?
or does that mean you just change suburbs?

I'd move to newcastle and ride Glenrock and Killingworth.

Hang on, I already live there.

O.K. I'll bite, Sydney has Yellomundee about an hours drive from most of Sydney, Arcadia Peebles Road about the same, Southern off Roads (NSW/ACT) state round 4 held there) new track about the same and Ourimbah about the same. For social Manly Dam and not much else. Use the search engine to see what these tracks are like. All you need is someone to do the same for Melbourne.

i moved to sydney from melbourne 2 years ago. i have ridden in a number of places in victoria and quite a few around sydney.
in my opinion all of the sandstone around sydney makes for some excellent riding locations within sydney and within reasonable driving distance from sydney.
i don't think melbourne has as many good locations as close to the city. you need to drive a bit further to find some good riding. i will welcome someone showing me otherwise as i am moving back to melbourne soon.
i am loving the sandstone around sydney at the moment though.

Can you add Canberra to that list ? Although you can still do a day trip to Sparrows from Syd.. its a long day.

Otherwise Sydney:
Adding to the rides already listed
Blue mountains (St Helenas, the Oaks, 6 foot track)
Illawarra and the Gong
Kangaroo Valley
Appin
Dharawal
.. and all the sniggle round my place I have no shortage of riding :D

Wrong - the best XC riding in the country is in Tassie - end of subject ;)

It was not a trick question, I am actually moving in from abroad and will have the chance to choose between Melbourne and Sydney as target locations.

Obviously there are other factors also driving the decision, but this is an important one too :-).

I will follow the links you provided, thanks for the overview!

If everyday riding in the city and suburbs is a concern, Melbourne is definately better than Sydney. Commuting by bike in Melbourne is much better (except for the weather). Better cycling infrastructure and more cyclists out on the roads means safer riding IMHO.

I'm a proud Melbourne resident and I can't help with the comparison, as I've never ridden in Sydney. However, I can point out what I like about Melbourne:

The commuting is good. Wide roads, more and more bike lanes being painted all the time and it pretty much never rains. Fair dinkum. The number of rainy days seems to be getting less and less every year. If you're going to challenge me on this, then please do your research first, cuz I'm out there every day and I only remember getting wet about twice in the last few months.

The trails are good. If you can't get out of the city, then there's a massive network of OK trails along the Yarra river. If you can leave the city, then the You Yangs MTB Park is less than an hour away and Castlemaine is only about 90 minutes away and they are two of the finest locations you could possibly take a MTB.

The people are good. Hardly anyone from Sydney lives here. :p

Are Sydney and Melbourne the only options?

Having lived pretty much all of my life with trails on the doorstep I find riding in them both really depressing in comparison, but I'm sure they both have their good points.

Where are you coming from and what are your expectations when it comes to riding?

Bodin I somehow always miss any XC race in Castlemaine so Ive yet to go there. Where abouts in Castlemaine is the park or trails? Melways ref? Thanks.
