So often lately it seems that I am having to ride distances with a shovel/maddock resting on my handlebars that its becoming a problem. Does anyone know of a product or something (similar to a backpack etc.) that makes riding distances with a shovel easier?

Back when I dug I carried one strapped to the bottom of a satchel...

It kept the cars away:o

you could build a rack like a surfboard rack on a shitter bmx or get a laptop backpack or razor scooter strap and put an eylet on the end and it will just clip on and off

One of those fold out army shovels would be easy to carry, but because it's smaller, it would take longer to dig. Another idea is to get a cheap shovel and leave it hidden up near the track. This depends on how popular the area is and whether or not the shovel can be hidden well or not.

we just hide our shovels in the bush near by but, the area is really really quiet and theres about 20 people that know where the jumps are....

cheap tool arent very good cos they have balsa wood handles. the Foldup military shovels are good for transport but you have to bend over all day and it taks 4 tims as long (personal experience)

Tie it to the underside of your seat (using cord, zipties, tape, whatever) and just rest it over your bars. I've done that a few times and it seems to be easy enough. Nothing gets in the way of your riding and it doesn't go anywhere either.

get some rope/strap and tie it to each end of the shovel/mattock handle and sling it over your back, but make sure it is really tight.

Or you could just tie it to your top tube.

Just buy a cheap shovel from your local hardware store and leave it where you ride, i bought a pure white steal one on sale at $15 maybe $20. For the convenience, its worth the cost. But if your wanting to constantly move the shovel and move locations then i guess a back back works alright providing it isnt to big or heavy, or just use the good old sling it over the shoulder technique or balance it on the handlebars.

but doesn't that (^^^) mean the shovel is both pressed akwardly against your back and also likely to fall out?

You could always do what a mate did, and that was to carry a bunch of zip-ties and a pair of scissors with him everywhere so he could zip-tie the two shovels to his frame.

It worked just ended up a bit scratched.

I agree with the the idea of putting the shovel in a backpack and just having the handle sticking up. I've done it before and it works pretty well, as long as you have something to tie the zips with, so it doesn't lean off to the side and fall out of your bag :p
Plus you can then put a water bottle or two in, plus a camera :)
